Chasing 'China-Like' Speed, European OEMs Are Handing Core Vehicle Realization to India

Дата публикации: 20-10-2026 13:41:39

European premium brands are increasingly awarding full-vehicle, turnkey realization contracts to Indian engineering service providers.
During Tata Technologies’ Q2 FY27 earnings conference call held recently, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Warren Harris disclosed that the company secured a $138 million full-vehicle engineering contract with a leading European luxury automotive manufacturer.
The agreement spans two vehicle programs from initial concept through vehicle launch over an estimated execution timeline of two and a half years, marking a shift toward outsourcing complete product outcomes rather than isolated engineering tasks.
The company also secured an engagement with a leading North American commercial vehicle manufacturer to lead the end-to-end development of a new vehicle platform and support the associated digital SDV infrastructure.
The $138 million contract illustrates a broader operational realignment among legacy automakers facing intensified competitive pressure from Chinese manufacturers. He emphasized that European legacy OEMs are scaling back fixed internal R&D overheads to concentrate on core brand identity, leaving complete platform realization to specialized global partners.
"Chinese OEMs have established new benchmarks for product innovation, development, speed, and cost-competitiveness and are increasingly expanding globally. In response, Western OEMs are becoming leaner and fundamentally rethinking how products are engineered and brought to market," noted Harris.
Talking about ES-Tec, a German engineering company acquired by Tata Technologies to gain a direct foothold inside the German car industry and of which Volkswagen is a primary client, the company management explained that their business is experiencing a temporary slump. The reason is that Volkswagen is currently undergoing major restructuring, trimming domestic budgets, and cutting headcount in Germany. The executives expect, the demand to start seeing recovering starting 2027.
The development should be seen in the context of European OEMs increasingly cutting jobs in their home countries to offshore them for better costing and efficiencies. For instance, Volkswagen recently announced plans to reduce headcount by 100,000 people between now and 2030, and more recently, BMW announced a VRS scheme in Germany.
