A body of mass m1 = 2 kg with a velocity v1 = 12 m/s collides elastically with a second body initially at rest. The first body continues to move in the same direction as the initial one but with a velocity equal to one-quarter of its initial velocity. Find the mass of the second body in kg.

From the general expression for the total kinetic energy before the collision, I tried to derive m2, but I couldn't:

Ec = 1/2 m1 v1^2 + 1/2 m2 v2^2

I can't extrapolate m2

For an elastic collision, another way to get a system of two linear equations in two unknowns is to
write the conservation equations in "gain-loss form",
then recognize that
  • the quadratic conservation of total kinetic-energy equation features "differences of squares"
and that
  • one can then (excluding the no-collision case)
    divide that by the linear conservation of total momentum equation
    to reduce the quadratic kinetic-energy equation to a linear equation involving the relative-velocity.
