Tata Power said the West Bengal government has shown a lot of keenness to promote rooftop solar adoption in the State under “Ghar Ghar Solar” initiative

The solar power projects can vary between 100 MW and 500 MW
Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has approached West Bengal government for land for setting up multiple solar projects, with a total installed capacity of around 500 MW, which may require a total investment of around ₹2500 crore.
“Right now, it is very preliminary. So, we are identifying land. They (State government) have given us three-four locations. We have to go and see the viability of these locations,” Tata Power CEO & MD Praveer Sinha told media persons here on Thursday.
Multiple projectsAccording to Sinha, multiple solar projects may be located in multiple locations in the State as getting a large land parcel may not be possible in West Bengal.
“The solar power projects can vary between 100 MW and 500 MW. Everything will not happen in one place. In some places 100 MW will happen, in some places 200 MW, depending upon how much land we have,” Sinha added.
Tata Power said the West Bengal government has shown a lot of keenness to promote rooftop solar adoption in the State under “Ghar Ghar Solar” initiative. The company has suggested that the State government consider providing additional incentives to households to encourage adoption of rooftop solar.
“West Bengal should come up with some State subsidy, similar to what is available in Odisha, Bihar and Assam, ranging from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per project, so that rooftop solar adoption in the State increases exponentially,” said Sanjay Banga, CEO and MD, Tata Power Renewable Energy.
Tata Power Renewable Energy is a subsidiary of Tata Power. Banga was talking to the media at the launch of the Ghar Ghar Solar and storage battery solution in Kolkata ahead of the Durga Puja celebrations.
When asked whether the leadership and governance differences between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts could disrupt the company’s expansion plans, Banga said the Tata Power subsidiary is independently managed by its board and that the differences would not impede its growth.
“No, our company is part of a publicly listed company managed by the board, so it has nothing to do with this (ongoing promoter level differences issue),” Banga said.
“The planned growth will continue,” he added, indicating that the company’s expansion programme would continue despite the developments at the parent-group level.
