Your daily Minnesota news roundup starts … NOW.

Federal prosecutors submitted a pile of evidence in relation to the 15 Minnesotans charged with conspiracy in anti-ICE activities during Operation Metro Surge, including a document that accuses public defender Matthew Deates of aiding and abetting an individual charged with reentering the United States illegally. The problem? Well, MPR News reports, first, Deates is not involved in the case against the Minnesota 15. Second, Deates neither aided nor abetted the escape of his client.

In an Oct. 1 court filing, Deates writes that he helped his client find lunch and then walked with him a block from the Minneapolis federal courthouse to the Government Plaza light rail station so Portillo Rodriguez could start his return trip to California.

Until he learned of the ICE memo, Deates writes he was unaware O’Neal and two U.S. marshals had followed him and Portillo Rodriguez out of the courthouse as part of an apparent effort to “conduct a unilateral administrative arrest” in violation of court orders.

Three shootings in the Twin Cities in the last week have law enforcement officials calling for a comprehensive and regional response to what has been reported as gang-related violence.

The latest suit filed by Keith Ellison’s office in its anti-fraud campaign is against Refocus Recovery, a nonprofit accused of funneling money to founder Daniel Larson’s for-profit addiction recovery program, Kyros.

Approximately 10% of St. Paul’s 38,000 streetlights are out, reported Public Works Director Deb Barber on Tuesday. Although measures have been taken to make it harder to remove copper from the lights in recent years, the rising price of copper has upped the incentive to steal it.

Automated license plate readers continue to catch heat, and now they’re the subject of a one-man campaign by Jason Szymarek, who carefully selected his vanity license plate with the aim of getting wrongfully pulled over, the Star Tribune reports.

When tracking vehicles, police will sometimes search their databases using the word “NONE” in the license plate field. So, when Szymarek acquired his Subaru in January, he chose “NONE” for his vanity plate.

And finally in your Minnesota news roundup: Who among us has not parked somewhere without being 100% sure it was totally cool to park there and then gotten burned? Now imagine you had just run 26.2 miles and came back to an empty parking space in the abandoned Sears parking lot in St. Paul. Rough.
