Not to put too fine a point on the track’s new-wave bona fides, the Talking Heads frontman serves as MC.
The post Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Drop “Expectations” Music Video, featuring David Byrne appeared first on Slant Magazine.
Rumors of a possible collab between Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan began to swirl last weekend when a German retailer listed the single on their website before quickly removing it. Rodrigo made it official two days later when she announced that Roan, who was the opening act for both her Sour and Guts tours, would be appearing on a remix of “Expectations,” the penultimate track from O-Rod’s album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love.
“Expectations” is a new wave-inflected bop filled with copious handclaps, squirmy synths, and buzzy guitar licks. The remix finds Rodrigo and Roan dressing down unworthy suitors: “She said she’d call me later/That was three weeks ago/Classic L.A. behavior,” Roan sings with side-eye in the second verse.
Directed by Bardia Zeinali, the music video for “Expectations” sees the duo playing contestants in a series of knock-offs of retro game shows like Hollywood Squares, Wheel of Fortune, and Family Feud. Not to put too fine a point on the track’s new wave bona fides, Talking Heads frontman David Byrne serves as master of ceremonies.
