Democrats are not hiding the fact that they plan to target Republicans if they regain control of Congress after the midterm elections in November.

Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, often described by her party as a 'moderate,' told University of Chicago students last week that she wants to 'deter' young Americans from working for the Trump administration.

The former CIA analyst told a live recording of the America, Actually! podcast that Democrats would select 'signature cases' to prosecute and 'go after people and projects that are just super egregious.'

'We do have to have accountability for the unbelievable corruption that we are living under right now,' she said, before addressing future graduates.

Slotkin said she wants those considering administration jobs to think: 'Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems I don't want, and so let me avoid participating in that.' She added: 'I want that deterrence message sent.'

She also predicted a contested 2028 Democratic presidential primary featuring 'new faces and big and bold ideas.' Asked about running herself, she said she was considering it but added: 'It does not need to be me. I just need someone who understands the mission.'

Conservatives condemned her remarks on X. New York Post columnist Miranda Devine called Slotkin a 'piece of work,' adding: 'This is what the Democrats present as a "moderate."'

FTC Commissioner Mark Meador said he was disappointed his alma mater would 'play host to such dangerous rhetoric,' calling it 'an embarrassment for all involved.'

Michigan Democrat Elisa Slotkin shared last week that she wants to deter young people from serving in the Trump administration while participating in an event at UChicago last week

President Donald Trump speaks with a group of supporters, including White House interns, as he departs the White House in August of 2025 in Washington, DC

Prior to the current congressional recess, some of Slotkin's Democratic colleagues revealed to the Daily Mail their plans to investigate members of President Donald Trump's family and other top allies if they are in control of at least one chamber of Congress after the midterms.

Senator Ruben Gallego, an Arizona Democrat and a fellow potential 2028 presidential hopeful, told the Daily Mail that Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is at the top of his list of people to investigate.

'The President's son-in-law is negotiating with Saudi Arabia. He's negotiating on behalf of us, and also having clients in Saudi Arabia,' Gallego told the Daily Mail earlier this month.

Connecticut's Richard Blumenthal, the top Democrat on the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, has World Liberty Financial in his sights.

The crypto firm was founded by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr alongside Zach and Alex Witkoff, sons of Special Envoy Witkoff.

FTC commissioner Mark Meador called out his alma mater for platforming Slotkin's comments

Conservative commentator Miranda Devine also weiched in on Slotkin's remarks

Blumenthal, who called himself the subcommittee's 'hopeful chairman,' also wants to examine 'the financial ties between the administration and Tether,' the world's largest stablecoin issuer.

Winning either chamber would hand Democrats subpoena power, potentially triggering lengthy legal battles with Trump donors and business partners.

Republicans insist Democrats won't get the chance. NRSC chairman Tim Scott, who runs the GOP's Senate campaign arm, told reporters earlier this month that he expects his party to hold its majority and possibly expand it.

Missouri Republican Josh Hawley has also told the Daily Mail that he was surprised Democrats hadn't 'already practically sent out schedules, hearing schedules'.

'They probably have lined up their witnesses... they are just salivating to do that, which voters I think have zero interest in,' he said earlier this month.
