Vice President JD Vance has revealed that he may not run for president in 2028, as a recent poll casts doubt on whether Americans believe he and President Trump are leading the US down the right path.

Vance, 42, revealed during an hour-long town hall hosted by CBS News on Saturday that there was certainly a chance he would not pursue the presidency to succeed Trump.

'Of course there's a chance,' Vance said. 'We've got four little kids, my wife has never loved politics. She loves public service.'

The revelation comes as a damning NBC News poll showed 71 percent of adults believe the US is on the 'wrong track,' with Election Day just over two weeks away.

Vance claimed he was waiting until after the midterms to make a decision on whether he would launch a presidential campaign.

'The way that I think about life, big life decisions — my wife will tell you this: I’m a procrastinator. I hate thinking about it,' Vance said.

The vice president added that after the election, he would 'have to think about it, then I will actually have to make a decision.'

'You know, anything can happen, man,' he added.

Vance said there was certainly a chance he would not pursue the presidency to succeed President Trump as polls show Republicans are expected to be swept in the midterms

Several polls show Vance as the frontrunner to lead the Republican Party in the 2028 election, followed by Marco Rubio.

While he leads among Republicans, NBC's polling suggests that may hold little weight with Americans, who are overwhelmingly disappointed with the Trump administration.

Only 28 percent of adults surveyed believed Trump's policies are helping the country, while 58 percent said they are hurting it. The remaining 14 percent said they aren't making a difference.

Another poll suggests that if the elections for Congress were held today, 55 percent of voters would support Democrats.

Democrats have been predicting a 'blue wave' – even a 'blue tsunami' – that will see them sweep the House and Senate, condemning Trump to two years of political stagnation and congressional investigations.

Most experts agree the House will go Democrat. It is just a question of by how much. But the Senate is a different story.

Republicans currently hold 53 Senate seats, while Democrats hold 47.

'Of course there's a chance. We've got four little kids, my wife has never loved politics. She loves public service,' said Vance when asked if there was a chance he may not run for office

On November 3, 35 Senate seats are up for election, 22 of which are currently held by Republicans.

Democrats need a net gain of four seats because, in a Senate split 50-50, Vance would hold the tie-breaking vote.

As Election Day looms closer, the vice president has repeatedly shut down questions about his political future.

But on October 1, he eagerly dished out an obvious jab at one of his potential 2028 GOP rivals, Ted Cruz.

'It is really obvious to me that, at this very moment, Ted Cruz is running for president,' Vance told NBC News.

'At this moment, I’m not. I’m trying to help elect Republicans. That’s what I’m going to keep on doing.'

Vance and Cruz were Senate colleagues before Vance was nominated to become Trump's running mate.

Cruz was Trump's most formidable GOP challenger in the 2016 campaign and was the last to drop out, after Trump received 45 percent of Republican support while the Texan received just 25 percent.

While Cruz is not on the ballot this year – his term runs through 2030 – he has been campaigning in swing states, including Iowa and South Carolina, both early presidential primary states, to fundraise for the GOP ahead of this year's elections.

The Texas senator's presidential ambitions are seen as a long shot.
