SKOWHEGAN — In a battle of unbeatens, Mt. Ararat made a statement.

Boosted by a quick-strike offensive attack, the Mt. Ararat field hockey team beat Skowhegan 4-1 on Monday in a matchup of two of Class A North’s top teams.

Four players scored for the Eagles (11-0), including freshman Leah Lafrance.

“It’s just a really good game to win and a really good game to play,” said Mt. Ararat senior captain Maddy Sweet, who scored a goal.

It was the first win over Skowhegan for the Eagles since at least 2014, when coach Krista Chase took over the program.

Senior Faith Pease scored for the River Hawks (11-1).

Eagles strike quickly

Mt. Ararat set the tone early, moving the ball with ease up the well-manicured Skowhegan grass field. The Eagles, ranked fourth in the Varsity Maine poll, surprised the second-ranked River Hawks with a goal just over two minutes into the game, when Lafrance was able to swipe a shot past Skowhegan goalie Michelle Williams for a 1-0 lead.

“(Lafrance) is a hockey player,” Chase said. “She plays ice hockey on the grass.”

Added Sweet: “(Lafrance) is holding down the fort, we’re really glad to have her. She’s our speed. … We’re so proud of her out there.”

The Eagles extended the lead to 2-0 with 22 seconds remaining in the first half, when Sweet was able to poke a shot in for the score in a scrum in front of the cage.

“They were really hungry and they showed up to play,” Chase said. “I’m really proud of them. It’s been kind of a bumpy year with scheduling, we’re in our games-every-other-day kind of (part) of the season. But we’ve been mentally preparing for this week, a lot of games in eight days.”

The Eagles played Wednesday and Saturday last week, and have games on Wednesday and Friday remaining this week.

Mt. Ararat added two fourth-quarter goals to seal the win. Junior Cali LeClair scored with 14:34 left, then junior Kamryn Chase took a well-placed pass from Avery Elliott and knocked it into the cage with under eight minutes left.

Skowhegan scored with 3:11 left, when Pease was able to knock a shot off a scrum in front of the Mt. Ararat cage.

What does it mean?

Skowhegan entered the game as the No. 1 seed in Class A North, followed by No. 2 Camden Hills (10-1) and Mt. Ararat. With the win, the Eagles swapped places with Camden Hills. The River Hawks, for now, remain the No. 1 seed, because they’ve played one more game than both the Eagles and the Windjammers.

Both the Eagles and the River Hawks face Camden Hills this week, Skowhegan on Wednesday and Mt. Ararat on Friday.

Lesson learned for Skowhegan

While the Eagles dominated possession in the first half, the River Hawks never quit, and turned pressure around on Mt. Ararat in the second half. The River Hawks outshot the Eagles by a 10-6 margin over the final two quarters, and had a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners.

“You’ve got to give respect to your opponent. (Mt. Ararat) played a beautiful game,” Skowhegan coach Gina Davis said. “We’ll be thanking them for that lesson deeper in the season. The goal isn’t to have an undefeated season. You learn your lesson, take your medicine. We’ll bounce back when we play Camden Hills, and how we respond to that will help determine the good versus the great programs.”

Unsung hero

Mt. Ararat junior Jaymie Bergman was outstanding on Monday, making 15 saves, including three saves during a 10-second stretch with 10:15 left in the third quarter.

Milestone win

Krista Chase, who has run the Mt. Ararat program since 2014, earned her 200th career win on Monday. She coached the Cony field hockey program from 2002-09, where she compiled an 88-37-2 record.

“It just means I’ve been around a really long time,” Chase laughed. “I attribute that 200 wins to all of my former teams at Cony and Mt. Ararat. I like that I’ve been around for a long time. I love this game and I love Maine field hockey. I love trying to grow programs, that’s my thing. It’s just a statement of longevity and hard work.”

Chase was gifted a Sea Bag with her name and the number 200 on each side.

Statitical leaders

• Mt. Ararat: Leah Lafrance (1 goal, 1 assist); Maddy Sweet (1 goal); Cali LeClair (1 goal); Kamryn Chase (1 goal); Jaymie Bergman (15 saves)

• Skowhegan: Faith Pease (1 goal); Michelle Williams (8 saves)
