Baby Driver star Ansel Elgort has sparked outrage after making a very awkward cultural faux pas.

The 32-year-old recently attended an event at the Leeum Museum of Art in Yongsan District in Seoul, South Korea, earlier this week.

The gathering was hosted to celebrate the start of Frieze Seoul – an international art fair that runs from Wednesday to Saturday. 

It saw a whole host of other famous faces in attendance including K-pop artist G-Dragon and director Park Chan-wook.

But it was his choice of outfit that caused a stir after photos of the event began circulating online.

The gala reportedly asked to follow the dress code of 'cocktail attire,' according to The Korea Times.

However, eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out that Elgort had opted to wear a yukata – traditional Japanese attire considered a summer kimono – at the event showcasing Korean culture.

The faux pas soon circulated on social media as many rushed in to share their anger at the choice.

'We haven't heard from Ansel Elgort for a while, and he makes his public international comeback by appropriating the f**k out Japanese culture while attending a Korean public event/gala,' one scathed.

'Was it necessary for Ansel Elgort to wear a Japanese traditional Kimono at a Korean event?! Especially considering the history between Korea and Japan. 

'I'm not against Japan or throwing shade around but it's a sensitive issue,' another wrote.

'Did he get off at the wrong airport during a layover?' one pointed out.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Elgort's representatives for comment. 

The outing comes after the West Side Story alum welcomed his first child – son Neo – with his rumored fiance, a Japanese American woman named Miona. 

'Fatherhood is exhilarating, exhausting, it's everything and more,' the Tokyo Vice producer-star, who speaks fluent Japanese, wrote on February 10.

'The present feels more present and the future brighter. He wakes us up all night and yet I've never felt stronger during the day. 

'He goes from crying to laughing, expressing everything he feels and it's freed me to do the same.

'I wanted to keep it sacred, just for us, but now I want to share this story with you as it's the brightest, happiest thing I've ever experienced.

Elgort previously ended an on/off decade-long relationship with his high school sweetheart, Violetta Komyshan, in 2022.
