AI drove 75pc of European funding this past quarter, according to date from Crunchbase.

Europe’s start-up scene recently enjoyed its best quarter for venture funding in four years, according to business data tracking platform Crunchbase.

Q3 2026 saw total start-up funding in the continent reach $25bn, up around 77pc in year-on-year terms from Q3 2025, during which $14bn was invested in the sector.

The latest total is marginally higher than Crunchbase reported for Q2 of this year, which also marked the best quarter in a four-year period at the time, at $24bn in venture funding.

AI drove 75pc of European funding this past quarter, according to Crunchbase, with an investment total of $18.8bn marking the highest proportion on record.

This is up from around $12bn in the previous quarter, and significantly higher than the $7bn in AI funding from Q3 2025.

The UK led Europe’s quarterly funding totals at $7.5bn. Germany ($5bn) and France ($4.8bn) gained market share for venture capital funding during Q3, with each posting their strongest quarters since early 2022.

Sweden ($1.5bn), the Netherlands ($1.4bn) and Spain ($1.2bn) enjoyed the next highest start-up investment totals.

“Europe represented 16pc of global venture capital in Q3, although the true impact of its technology and start-ups is higher, with many of the region’s start-ups expanding or moving to the US to capitalise on the rapid growth of AI there,” Crunchbase’s report noted.

Its data is based on reported information as of 5 October.

Four individual European companies raised billion-dollar-plus funding during the most recent quarter, representing close to 40pc of the region’s total start-up capital for the period.

France’s AI champion Mistral said its $3.5bn September Series D raise was “the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company”. Earlier this week, it announced a new open-weight AI model that it said “significantly outperforms” any open-weight model developed in the US or Europe.

UK AI infrastructure developer Nscale raised a convertible note of $3.36bn that it plans to convert upon going public, according to Crunchbase.

German defence-tech start-ups Helsing and Quantum Systems raised $1.8bn and $1.2bn respectively in the past quarter.

A total of $17.3bn, or 70pc of Europe’s Q3 venture capital, was invested in late-stage deals across 83 companies, according to Crunchbase, which defines this type of funding as Series C, D, E and beyond, venture rounds of unknown series, corporate venture, and other rounds more than $15m.

“Along with growth in AI funding, late-stage funding noticeably increased last quarter, with many of the leading rounds sourced across multiple European countries,” the report said.

Early-stage funding – defined as Series A and B rounds, rounds of unknown series, corporate venture, and other rounds more than $3m and less than or equal to $15m – came to $5.7bn.

This total for Q3, spread across 200 or so companies, was down from Q2 and similar to the same period in 2025, while being shared among fewer individual deals than previous quarters.

Europe’s seed funding, meanwhile, fell quarter-over-quarter and was flat year-over-year, with around $2bn invested in roughly 750 companies at seed stage during Q3.
