The FDA approved Brytly, a nonprescription eye drop for the relief of eye redness.
Brytly (apraclonidine ophthalmic solution, 0.125%, Alcon) is approved for people aged 12 and older and is meant to be used no more than two times per day. Contact lenses should be removed prior to use, and users should wait at least 10 minutes after applying the drops before reinserting their contacts. Users should also wait 5 minutes before applying other eye drops.
The FDA highlighted that the approval aligns with its “public health pillars,” one of which is “increasing access to affordable medicines and medical products,” according to its website.
“Expanding access to safe and effective nonprescription treatments is a priority for FDA,” Mike Davis, MD, PhD, director of the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in the release. “Today’s approval of Brytly gives consumers a new nonprescription option to manage eye redness conveniently and without needing to see a healthcare provider.”
