Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes‘ 2006 wedding was one of Hollywood’s biggest spectacles, but Jenny McCarthy‘s memories of the star-studded affair reveal a few eyebrow-raising moments that didn’t exactly go according to the fairytale.
And leave it to McCarthy to wait 20 years to spill the tea on her experience at the former couple’s wedding. In this era, she was dating Jim Carrey, so she often found herself in Cruise and Holmes’ same social circle.
“At that time, she looked like a deer in headlights. This was well into the marriage. During the wedding part, she still seemed like Katie, but into the marriage it seemed there was a shift in her,” McCarthy claimed on the October 15 episode of The Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg Show.

The Playboy Playmate was perplexed by their relationship because “the juxtaposition between Katie at this time and Tom’s world was very polar opposite.” Cruise was constantly surrounded by “handlers” from the Church of Scientology who didn’t want him “to stray or say the wrong thing.”
McCarthy recalled Holmes’ maid of honor’s speech at the wedding where she said, “I met Katie when we went to high school together, we used to party, we used to drink beers and get kegs, and we had parties and sleepovers!” McCarthy explained that it was “very Midwest” and “adorable,” but the story was much different when Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige made his best man speech.
“It was 30 minutes long, about how Tom and Katie are now going to be the most important couple in the world. I’m sitting next to Will Smith, JLo, Jim, the crème de la crème,” McCarthy explained while noting that Miscavige talked at length about the “mega celebrity duo” being the most “powerful force” in Hollywood.
McCarthy continued, “I was so shocked, and I was looking around at everyone’s faces, and I could just see all of Katie’s family going, ‘What? What?’ Even Katie- I was watching Katie’s face, just like trying to smile her way through it.”
McCarthy also remembered a strange moment when she asked to hold Holmes and Cruise’s daughter, Suri. “The entire party went like this,” McCarthy Wahlberg recalled, demonstrating that the room suddenly froze and then everyone’s head whipped around to stare at her. “It looked like Rosemary’s Baby.”
She said Holmes slowly handed Suri to her as the room went completely silent: “I got the Scientology stare. No one was speaking anymore. No one was talking.”
Over the years, other celebrities have briefly discussed their attendance at the 2006 nuptials, including Leah Remini and Brooke Shields. After Shields was criticized by Cruise for her use of antidepressants to treat her postpartum depression, the Top Gun star apologized by inviting her to his wedding.
Shields revealed that Holmes asked her to bring a gift that fit the ”something old” tradition.
“I had to, like, hunt antique places,” Shields told Entertainment Weekly in May 2024. “To find the perfect, you know, gift to give her. It was a little compact that you put a ring… So you’re supposed to be able to look at their reflection in it and have it around their finger.
Still, McCarthy’s recollections seem to be much juicier than Shields’ sweet gift.
The wedding of the year turned out to be short-lived since the couple only stayed married for six years. They divorced in 2012, and daughter Suri has dropped Cruise’s last name. She now goes by Suri Noelle.
