After the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger to form Skydance, Mike De Luca and Paula Abdi are out, but James Gunn and Peter Safran are still in. Deadline reports that the DC Studios co-heads will continue to lead the DCU creatively after Paramount’s acquisition of their rival studio, following a successful meeting with Skydance co-CEO David Ellison. In short, that means no shake-ups for the current DC timeline, which sees “Man Of Tomorrow” hit theaters on July 9, 2027, and Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman Part II” arrive on February 18, 2028.

Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. gives Skydance a superhero franchise it hopes will become a viable competitor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Adding the DCU to an IP list that already includes “Star Trek,” “Mission: Impossible,” and more is a win for Ellison and Skydance, but it remains to be seen if Gunn and Safran’s new label will stand toe-to-toe with Kevin Feige‘s unflagging juggernaut. Gunn’s “Superman” fared okay critically and commercially last summer, but “Supergirl” tanked this year, and the prospects of “Clayface,” in theaters on October 21, look shaky at best. With “Avengers: Doomsday” projecting to be another box-office behemoth for the MCU, Skydance will no doubt want Gunn and Safran to produce a mega-hit to match it sooner rather than later.
But it hasn’t all been middling in the DCU. “Lanterns” is a massive success on HBO, with viewership rising as the show’s season finale approaches this Sunday. However, that’s only one title that’s a no-doubt winner since Gunn and Safran took over DC Studios in October 2022. If the duo doesn’t want to be ousted like De Luca and Abdy, then “Man Of Tomorrow” needs to be a big hit, or, further out on the horizon, “The Brave And The Bold.” “The Batman Part II” is very much Reeves’ own thing, despite being under the DC banner, so Gunn and Safran can’t exactly take credit for that one.
Will any other shakeups happen as Ellison steers Skydance toward the future? No doubt there will be, and it’s still waiting to be confirmed if De Luca and Abdy will indeed depart WB entirely; they still need to meet with Ellison in person. But for now, expect the DCU’s first chapter, “Gods and Monsters,” to stay the course. Expect Ellison’s ambition to affect Gunn and Safran’s plans at some point, though.
