That’s a safe title, if anything, and hints that the franchise will return to the Egyptian setting of the first two movies and its spinoff series, “The Scorpion King.” Fans of 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor” may be disappointed to hear that, but, well, those people are few and far between.

For those living under a rock, the 1999 film, an adventurous reboot of the classic Universal Monsters franchise starring Boris Karloff, follows a treasure hunter who awakens an undead, cursed Egyptian priest who wreaks havoc as he tries to resurrect his beloved Anck-su-namun. The 2001 sequel “The Mummy Returns” tread a similar story, albeit with expansive stakes (and the first major film role of Dwayne Johnson as The Scorpion King).
First announced late last year, “The Mummy: The Book Of The Dead” brings back Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as franchise stars Rick and Evie O’Connell. But they’re not the only familiar faces returning: John Hannah, Kevin J. O’Connor, Arnold Vosloo, and Oded Fehr will also reprise their roles. Newcomers for the sequel include “Obsession” star Michael Johnston and Numan Acar, and stay tuned if anyone else joins the cast as the shoot continues.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, otherwise known as Radio Silence, will be behind the camera for “The Book Of The Dead.” They’ll direct a screenplay by “Orphan: First Kill” scribe David Coggeshall. Sean Daniel is on board to produce, along with William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment, and Clayton Townsend. Exec producers include Fraser and Jason F. Brown of Hivemind
As noted earlier, “The Mummy: The Book Of The Dead” hits theaters next year on October 15, 2027. Expect a teaser trailer to hit early next year.
