Il transcript da Youtube, per chi fa più fatica con l’inglese:
Sophie Adenot’s return to Earth - Statement from Cologne Airport
Yeah, it feels a bit strange to be back on Earth right now, whereas for eight months I was orbiting Earth, seeing this beautiful planet, and now I have my feet on Earth, trying to stand, but it’s very ambitious. Feels more like being held, because I cannot really stand on myself right now, but I’m happy to be back with you all. Thank you.
I wanted to first say thank you to to my crewmates, Expedition 74, Expedition 75, and Crew 12. We kind of became a family together. I didn’t expect these tears to come that soon, so we probably will have to revise the timeline, but yeah, we lived some, all of the spectrums of the human emotions, from the most joyful to the most tough emotions together, and space is a beautiful adventure, but I can tell you no one goes to space alone.
I also wanted to thank all of the ground teams, the support teams, the engineers, the scientists, the people behind console, who helped us. They always got our back when we had doubts. I also wanted to thank all of the international partners, because space is a beautiful adventure that we all live together, and that unites people from all over the countries, all over the world.
I wanted to thank as well the medical teams. I gave them a little challenge on return. Adapting to space was very easy for me.
Going up there, launch was a piece of cake. Coming back to Earth was not a piece of cake at all. This is why we delayed coming back to Europe until health was stabilised, because I could not do the transatlantic flight until I was more stable.
So thank you for your patience. I know I probably screwed your schedules as well. But I’m aware of this, and I thank you for your patience.
Beautiful teams around, I can tell you. These teams not only made the mission a success, but they made the mission a beautiful mission and a joyful mission I will remember my entire life. I also wanted to say that teamwork is also recognising who is strong and who is weak, and giving a hand to whoever is weak at some point.
No one is a hero, we’re just all humans. Sometimes you’re the strong one, you’re helping, you’re taking more than your share of work. And sometimes you’re the weak one, and you’re accepting the hands of others.
And among our teams up there, we all had the whole spectrum. So yeah, I really thank all of the teams on the ground and up there. You know, space is tough.
Space, you probably saw a lot of joyful reels on my Instagram or on my social media. Yeah, that was the dominant emotion, the dominant feeling. It was joy, a lot of joy, a lot of happiness, a lot of uniting moments, bonding moments.
A lot of times where also we thought we were helping science to make progress. And we were proud of everyone, from the ground teams to the space teams. So that said, space is tough, but it’s also very uniting.
You know, from this beautiful window, the cupola, I searched for borders. I searched for division. I did not see any of those.
The only thing I saw was… I’ll wait for this. The only thing I saw was that Earth was more than enormous. It was really precious.
No division, no borders, just a precious planet that we all share as our home. I saw… Sorry, it’s emotional. It’s fun to see tears flowing downwards.
I was not used to this for eight months. So from this beautiful window, I saw auroras across the planets. I saw glowing cities at night, also beautiful oceans.
I saw beautiful mountains, but I promise you cannot see any sort of division. So this is why I love space flight. It is uniting.
And until the end of my career, I will spread the word. It is so important to feel united around some projects that are ambitious enough to unite everyone, regardless of the origin, regardless of the nationality, regardless of the background. And yeah, that was my main takeaway.
I went into space with a head full of dreams, full of procedures. And I came back full of gratitude for having observed that much unity among people who decided to be united. I also wanted to say that being far away from planet Earth makes me feel how it… We all need to be aware how many little things, ordinary things, we can enjoy from Earth.
Just fresh air, the breeze on the cheeks. And this Earth is giving it to us I also wanted to say that for any of you who have big dreams, ambitious dreams, and people who tell them that those are impossible, just think that all the big dreams, they start with very ordinary steps. And ordinary steps stacked upon each other, with the teams who all help, become big achievements.
So this is the main meaning of this Epsilon patch. All the little dots around are all of the little ordinary steps by everyone. And thank you again for everything you did for this mission.
Now, talking about the future. I don’t know where the future holds. My first mission is to be able to stand on my feet, obviously, on my own, which might be a little challenging.
By the way, I just wanted to mention that what you see here is all of the normal adaptation syndrome of astronauts coming back to Earth, especially for long duration missions. So it’s absolutely normal. The doctors here were not surprised by any of the symptoms that I had.
It’s just that we need to take our time for getting back on track for orthostatic intolerance, which means that the heart has to adjust pumping to gravity so that there is enough blood to the brain, so that I don’t faint every time I stand up. This is already on a good path. The second thing that I’ll have to work on, but it will take the time it will take, is vestibular system.
So, giving the Right now, I have the feeling that everything spins around me. It’s like a drunk sailor on a crazy boat. So, it’s kind of an interesting experience.
But everything is normal. And because the vestibular system has been used to like zero inputs now, every little turning my head, every little movement is like a huge sail to those somersaults. It feels like I’m spinning on a roller coaster.
But that’s kind of fun… -ish. Yeah. So about the future, and this will be my final word, I don’t know what the future will be for me.
But I can tell you for sure what I want to carry with me. Sorry. Okay, Houston teams are nominal. No worries. Continuing.
So, I want to carry with me this curiosity, courage, because yes, it requires some courage.
The sense of gratitude for everything you did for this mission. Gratitude to people I love. And yeah, being carried by a lot of people like you who are willing to share the world, the world that spaceflight is a uniting adventure.
So thank you to everyone.
