magic-at-the-masthead-if:Man, I have had a weird week. I have covid and, not wishing to pass it on to my family, I have been isolating in my room. Putting on an FFP3 and sanitising my hands to go to the bathroom, literally staying in there with the door closed except when my partner hands me meals and I collect them from the table outside my room while holding my breath. And like, I did already understand intellectually why most of the published work has historically been produced by rich men with wives and servants but I feel like I now have a much more personal grasp of the difference.I have NO CHORES!! Like, none! I don’t have to load the dishwasher, I just put my used plate on the table outside my door, and it gets taken away and replaced four hours later with a nice new meal. I don’t even have to make my own cups of tea. I get to hang out with my daughter (over video chat, but still), but I don’t have to make her packed lunches or wash her school uniforms or take her to swimming. She just gets handed over to me for an hour or so so we can play the lego puzzle game while my partner makes the tea!I mean, he is absolutely run ragged but I AM GETTING SO MUCH DONE! I get up, go to my desk. I work all day. I have dinner. I go back to my desk and work for the evening. No disruptions to my flow, no niggling “I ought to go and buy groceries”. And it’s better than the fanciest hotel because not only do I have all my home comforts, but I also have essentially a personal chef who knows what I like!Anyway I am out of quarantine tomorrow and obviously I do *want* to go back to my normal life but… Yeah. No longer so impressed by Charles Dickens’ word counts, frankly.
