Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has hinted that WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert could be ousted at the end of the season.

The comments come amid mounting player dissatisfaction and an intense league-wide debate surrounding transgender participation in women's sports.

Speaking in an interview with USA Today, Fever star Cunningham suggested the league needs a 'bold' leader who puts the interests of players first.

'You do have to have a person in power who is bold, who is confident, who wants the best for the players and not maybe for themselves all the time,' Cunningham said.

'So I do feel like, as a whole, that could be a position that's maybe open at the end of the year, but that's not my call.'

Engelbert's current contract is set to expire after the 2026 season, her seventh in charge of the league.

While acknowledging that Engelbert has 'done a lot of good things,' Cunningham argued that executive leadership is failing to match the ambition of the players.

'With where our league is trying to go, I feel like you just want someone who also wants that,' Cunningham added.

'That’s just a hard position to be in, in her shoes, us as players, we always want more, more, more because we see how good it can be, but that’s up to [NBA commissioner] Adam Silver at the end of the day'. 

Cunningham became a lightning rod for controversy last month after voicing opposition to transgender athletes competing in women's sports during an interview with ESPN.

Her remarks triggered protests and small rallies outside Fever road games in the weeks that have followed, leaving WNBA fans divided over the matter.

The public fallout prompted Engelbert to issue a memo to teams, establishing a task force of team executives to navigate discussions around gender eligibility policies.

The league subsequently issued a statement calling for thoughtful dialogue while rejecting what it termed 'bad-faith' arguments surrounding the issue.

However, Cunningham is not the only star pressuring league executive leadership.

Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has previously taken aim at the league office over player welfare and labor negotiations, calling for greater accountability as the current collective bargaining agreement nears its conclusion.

Addressing Engelbert's future during the NBA Summer League in July, Silver praised the WNBA's growth but remained noncommittal about an extension, stating that discussions regarding the future are ongoing.
