“Saturday Night Live” star Michael Che shared his reaction after the show’s host last weekend, Shane Gillis, generated backlash with a joke about women’s clothing in his opening monologue.
Gillis was criticized when he joked that women dress like “whores” at the gym.
“I haven’t been to the gym in so long,” Gillis said during the Oct. 10 episode of “SNL.” “I didn’t know women just dressed like whores now. Look, I’m sorry. There’s no other way to describe — have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts?”
Che appeared on TODAY Oct. 15 to promote his new comedy special on Netflix, “Michael Che: Shot in Minnesota,” out now.
“It’s not a morning time special but it is really fun,” he told TODAY’s Laura Jarrett.
In the interview, Che was also asked by Laura about his Instagram post from earlier in the week that referenced Gillis. He wrote, “gotta do more press this week to promote the special. wonder what every f—— questions gonna be about. thanks a lot shane.”
“How are you thinking about what happened this week with Shane’s opening monologue?” Laura asked. “You’ve seen the pushback.”
“That’s comedy. It’s like, you think it’s funny and then some people don’t,” he replied.
“Did you laugh at what he said?” Laura asked.
“I was at cue cards, actually, thinking about what I was going to say that was going to make people upset, so I didn’t even see it until, like, the next day,” he responded.
Asked for what he thought of the joke when he did see the monologue, Che said, “I didn’t think about it honestly.”
Backlash to Gillis’ monologue was swift, receiving criticism across social media and from some celebrities, including comedians Ego Nwodim and Dan Levy.

TODAY.com has reached out to Gillis and “Saturday Night Live” for comment about the monologue but has not heard back.
Che said on TODAY that some writers see the opening monologue in advance of the show “if you’re not working.”
“There’s so much going on. It’s really hard to see what everyone is doing, especially for me. I’m not what they call ‘good at my job,’ so I don’t pay attention to that,” he said.
“That’s why I focus on ‘Update,’ because it’s not something that I’m natural at, so I got to really, really work at it,” he added. “I got to study it.”
Che was also asked about “SNL’s” joke swap tradition, in which he and his fellow “Weekend Update” co-host Colin Jost write lines for each other to read aloud for the first time live on air. Laura pointed out that the jokes can be intense.
“That’s why I can’t criticize anybody for swinging and missing because I’ve definitely swung and missed, too,” Che said. “I try to keep that heat off of me.”
