After a disappointing 2-3 start to the season, the Dallas Cowboys defense held a players-only meeting as they try to turn things around. But according to one Super Bowl-winning head coach, that might not be a great sign.
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has been in his fair share of NFL locker rooms over the years. And he thinks that when a team is having players-only meetings, its season might already be lost, especially when news of those meetings goes public.
Cowboys’ Defensive StrugglesDallas fell to a 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Thursday night, moving to a disappointing 2-3 on the season. The defense has been the biggest issue for the Cowboys this season, allowing 395.4 total yards per game, the second-most in the NFL.
Given the struggles, the defensive players got together for a meeting on Monday morning, which linebacker DeMarvion Overshown described as a “heart to heart.”
“Looking ourselves in the mirror,” Overshown said of the meeting, via the team’s website. “Putting what we wanted our standard to be, we put that on the board. We went by bullet point, bullet point. Are we holding up to this? Are we being this?”
“We’ve got to talk to each other like that because the ship is only going to go as far as the weakest person on the boat,” Overshown added.
‘I Think You’re Dead’While Overshown and the Cowboys might see this as a positive sign as they look to fix things, Tomlin, now an analyst for NBC’s Football Night in America, does not think this is a great sign.
“I think you’re dead,” Tomlin said on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce. “When you’re having players-only meetings, it doesn’t feel good.”
Tomlin explained that his bigger issue beyond the meeting itself is when news of the meeting gets out. He said that if such a meeting did occur, he’d rather not hear about it.
“The fact that you hear about it is what makes it BS,” Tomlin said.
Needless to say, that doesn’t bode well for a Cowboys team whose meeting was discussed publicly by one of its own players the very same day.
We’ll have to see whether or not the Cowboys can prove him wrong.
