It took comedian Shane Gillis just six and a half minutes of opening-monologue time on Saturday Night Live over the weekend to disparage lesbians, call women at the gym “whores,” make homophobic jabs, refer to his sisters as “bitches,” call Joe Rogan his friend, and casually mention Hitler.

And while the studio audience certainly seemed to find it all very funny, plenty of others — including parents, celebs, and fellow comedians — have been taking to social media to express their anger at both Gillis and SNL for putting “misogynistic” humor front and center in the midst of the ongoing national outrage over the Cornell 7 rape case.

Will Arnett, Amy Poehler

“Shane Gillis knows that there is a major national conversation happening right now about sexual assault,” said feminist-mom writer Jessica Valenti, author of Why Have Kids?, in a video posted to all of her social channels with the caption, “I am LIVID.”

“He knows what the conversation is, and this is his contribution to that conversation,” she continued. “This is what turns young men into rapists.”

Dan Levy took to Instagram, posting a video of himself speaking about the monologue. “I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television,” he said, noting that “Women wearing short shorts to the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them ’whores’ misogynists.’”

Levy then called for more men to be standing up in opposition because “it’s complacency that has created the environment in which women are sexually assaulted.” Plenty of celebs took to his comment section to thank him for his support, including Hannah Einbinder, Sophia Bush, Elizabeth Banks, Viola Davis, Sarah Michelle Geller, Jewel, Elizabeth Perkins, and Maggie Baird, who noted, “A lot of people allowed that to make it to air.”

Yesteryear author Caro Claire Burke already has over 211,000 views on her response to the monologue, called “Thoughts from a whore.” In her video, she says that Gillis’s “real subconscious goal” is not to be funny, but “to reinforce the reality of certain power dynamics and to remind you that he is on top of those power dynamics.”

“Aren’t we sick of this misogynistic, lazy-ass, hack, mediocre, straight, f***ing disdain for women that’s masked as f***ing comedy?” asked comedian Phoebe Robinson in an Instagram video.

There was a time, not that long ago, that SNL appeared to be tired of it: The show, which announced Gillis would be joining its cast in 2019, fired him a few days later after racist and anti-gay slurs surfaced from his podcast. Still, he was brought back to host in 2024, 2025, and this past weekend, prompting the outcry and a headline from Variety noting, “Shane Gillis Bombs ‘SNL’ Monologue (Again).’

SNL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Threads, activist Lauren Hogg called the monologue “one of the most blatant displays of the gender intelligence/literacy gap (both emotional and intellectual) I’ve ever seen on television. [Musical guest] Rosalía was literally singing in multiple languages, en pointe, about spirituality and deep introspection, while Shane Gillis stood in jeans and sneakers making misogynistic jokes about what women wear to the gym.”

Film producer Brenna Perez connected many of the dots laid out by Gillis in his monologue to really drive home the point of his ill-timed and arguably dangerous jokes. “

Even if Shane Gillis wouldn’t do something to a woman on a hike or in any other scenario,” she said, “this idea that workout clothes is somehow ‘dressing like a whore,’ is step one to the cultural normalization behind, ‘Well, she was dressed like she was asking for it.’”
