The vice-chair of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) Board of Regents issued her resignation on Monday, citing a “dysfunctional culture.”
In a letter addressed to Gov. Ned Lamont, Juanita James said she joined the Board of Regents as she felt her 40 years of experience could contribute to the larger vision of statewide higher education.
She goes on to mention that she has found the “dysfunctional culture” and “political infighting” presented insurmountable obstacles to progress. The full letter reads:
I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign from the Board of Regents of Higher Education for Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU), effective immediately.
I joined the BOR after serving more than 40 years as a Trustee of Higher Education institutions- Princeton University, Lesley University, and the University of Connecticut-because I felt that my breadth and depth of experience would contribute to achieving the vision of the statewide public higher education system that would enhance the lives of tens of thousands of students while serving as the economic growth engine for our state.
However, I have found that the dysfunctional culture and political in-fighting present insurmountable obstacles to progress. The reprehensible behavior of the former Interim Chancellor is inexcusable.
Rumors and conjecture outweigh truth. Public attacks and insults are made with impunity.
This is a no-win situation for everyone, especially the students that we are here to serve.
I have worked with dozens of organizations and hundreds of people to be part of making a positive impact on people’s lives. Unfortunately, I do not see an opportunity to be effective in this environment. Therefore, I resign, effective immediately.
NBC Connecticut reached out to the governor’s office and they said in response:
“Thank you to Jaunita James for her service to the CSCU system over these past four years. We are looking at the membership of the Board of Regents and expect to make new appointments soon.”
An independent review released on Sept. 17 found an “overall failure” on the part of multiple people in the way CSCU handled sexual harassment allegations involving former Interim Chancellor John Maduko.
“There was an overall failure on the part of multiple individuals to initiate and follow established policy and procedures for reporting, responding to, and addressing reports of sexual harassment, and in particular, reports of sexual harassment involving an interim System Chancellor,” Grand River Solutions, which conducted the review, wrote in the first paragraph of the executive summary.
Maduko resigned in April, and documents released by the Board of Regents in May showed that he had been under investigation after an employee accused him of sending sexual messages and making sexual comments toward her over a period of approximately two years.
