A new investigation of fragments found in the exclusion zone has revealed that many are remarkably unchanged.

On April 26th, 1986, the catastrophic accident that befell the No. 4 reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in northern Ukraine would not only expose thousands of people to dangerous levels of radiation, but also leave the whole area uninhabitable for thousands of years.

The incident would go on to become ingrained in popular culture, not only as one of the worst disasters of the modern age but also as a symbol of the dangers of nuclear power.

Today, the extensive exclusion zone around the plant remains heavily restricted, with former homes remaining empty and the whole area serving as a ghostly reminder of a community now long since lost.

Recently, scientists conducted a new investigation of the radioactive fragments that litter the zone.

To their surprise, many of them had remained almost completely unchanged, meaning that some of the most dangerous radioactive debris from the accident is likely to take much longer to break down than had been previously expected.

"Our findings demonstrate that Chernobyl fuel particles act as remarkably persistent reservoirs of fission products and actinides in the environment," the researchers wrote.

"Preserved... structures in Chernobyl particles after nearly four decades indicate these particles will continue acting as persistent radioactive reservoirs for the foreseeable future."

Suffice to say, nobody's going to be safely moving back into the exclusion zone to live anytime soon.
