New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler was forced out of yesterday’s loss to the Utah Mammoth after suffering an undisclosed injury. Head coach Sheldon Keefe told the media yesterday, including team reporter Amanda Stein, that the Devils “won’t know” the full extent of Siegenthaler’s injury until he can be fully evaluated “in the coming days.” New Jersey Hockey Now’s Daniel Amoia wrote as Siegenthaler left the ice that the defenseman appeared to be “in a lot of pain,” but was able to get up under his own power. Siegenthaler appeared to suffer the injury after a collision in the corner with Mammoth forward Logan Cooley.

Should Siegenthaler miss any time, the Devils’ defense would be dealt a substantial blow. While he doesn’t have the kind of flashiness to his game of some of his teammates, such as Luke Hughes or Dougie Hamilton, Siegenthaler has been a steady defensive force since the Devils acquired him in a 2021 trade with the Washington Capitals. Last season, Siegenthaler played all 82 games for the club and averaged 19:28 time on ice per game including nearly two minutes per game on the penalty kill. If Siegenthaler misses time, New Jersey would almost certainly have to recall a blueliner from the AHL’s Utica Comets, as they are currently without a healthy No. 7 on their active roster. Call-up options include top prospect Anton Silayev, experienced 25-year-old Vladislav Kolyachonok, or other names such as Ethan Edwards, or Topias Vilen.

Other injury updates from the Eastern Conference:

• Buffalo Sabres forward Josh Doan is currently dealing with a nagging lower-body issue, head coach Lindy Ruff told the media yesterday. (via Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic) Doan saw his ice time limited in the third period of yesterday’s overtime win over the Minnesota Wild, and Ruff attributed some of Doan’s early struggles to his nagging injury. Ruff did also express his confidence that Doan would be able to get back on track. The 24-year-old is one of the promising young forwards who helped power the Sabres to their first playoff run in over a decade last season, and Doan himself was perhaps the team’s biggest breakout storyline. The former Arizona Coyotes prospect scored a career-high 25 goals and 52 points in the regular season, while adding an impressive 10 points in 13 playoff games helping the Sabres come within a single goal of the Eastern Conference Final.
• Capitals defenseman Matt Roy will miss tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins as he deals with a lower-body injury, head coach Spencer Carbery told the media today. (via Monumental Sports’ Tarik El-Bashir) Roy’s injury is not seen as one that is hugely disruptive and his absence is currently considered day-to-day. The 31-year-old is a crucial defensive anchor for the Capitals’ defense, and his loss means the team will need to fill significant defensive minutes, especially on the penalty kill. Roy’s spot in the Capitals’ lineup will go to veteran Dylan McIlrath, who will make his 2026-27 debut against the Penguins tonight.
