I’m visiting Raleigh this weekend, wondering what breweries might be exceptional. I may only have time for a couple breweries, one of which will certainly be Burial’s taproom.

The Raleigh Beer Garden has over 350 taps - an iconic place to visit

That sounds familiar… multi-floor extravaganza, right?

I tend to agree. I’ve been to Trophy, Brewery Bhavana, Crank Arm and Raleigh Brewing Co. The only standout was Crank Arm where the beers were quite good and the staff was exceptional, but that was literally a decade ago. Since then I’ve heard their beers have gone downhill. Bhavana makes decent stuff, but some controversy surrounding them several years back that I won’t get into would make me choose to spend my money elsewhere. Trophy is fine, but not great and Raleigh Beer Co seems to exist just because it’s right next to a college campus. Again, my experience is from a long time ago, so any Raleighans (?) jump in to tell me if I’m wrong

My understanding is that the people involved in the offensive actions back which came to light back in 2000 have all been fired and any ownership they had has been relinquished. The remaining owners brought in a new CEO and overhauled operations following independent third-party investigations. I have not seen anything since that time that would give me pause about patronizing Bhavana which, to my mind, is a distinctive experience and makes the best beers I have had in Raleigh. The food is really good, too.
