Igor Fraga had the best Saturday of his Super Formula career at Fuji Speedway, converting his first pole position in the series into his first full-length race victory. It’s his second win of the 2026 season and the third of his career, and the first that didn’t come in a shortened replacement race.

The result also moves him up to second in the championship standings heading into Sunday’s final race at Fuji.

Pole Position

Fraga set the tone early in the day. With qualifying split into two groups, he finished second in his Q1 group, just 0.002 seconds behind Tadasuke Makino, before going fastest of all in Q2 to claim his first Super Formula pole. It’s a milestone he had been chasing since stepping up to a full-time seat with Ponos Nakajima Racing in 2025.

The Race

With 24 cars on the grid and the sun warming the track to 35°C, Fraga made a clean getaway from pole and led the field through the opening lap. The 41-lap race ran without a single safety car, which meant no restarts and no free passes to anyone behind him.

Once the leader had completed 11 laps, the tire-change window was open, and the question became whether Fraga could keep the advantage through the pit cycle.

Kakunoshin Ohta, running second, stopped at the end of lap 20, and Fraga came in a lap later. Fraga rejoined ahead, but Ohta had pushed hard on his out-lap and was right behind him by the hairpin.

Fraga leaned on the “Overtake System” (Super Formula’s push-to-pass button, which gives a short power boost from a limited per-race allowance) almost continuously for two laps to protect his position, and it worked.

By the time every car had made its stop, Fraga was back at the top of the timing screens with a lead of a little more than two seconds. Ohta chipped away in the closing laps, getting the gap down to under two seconds, but Fraga responded with a run of quicker laps and pulled clear again. A late steering problem for Ohta removed any remaining threat, and Fraga crossed the line to take the win.

Championship Picture

With pole and the race win, Fraga now sits on 74 points, second in the standings. Ohta, who finished second on Saturday, leads with 122 points, a gap of 48. Ayumu Iwasa is third, 54.5 points behind Ohta, with Nirei Fukuzumi a further 4.5 back in fourth.

Sunday’s Round 10 offers up to 23 points (20 for the win, plus three for pole), with another 46 on the table at the Suzuka double-header in November. All three of Ohta’s remaining challengers are still mathematically alive, but Ohta can end the fight early. If he leaves Fuji with a lead of 47 points or more over whoever is nearest to him in the standings, the title is his with two races to spare.

Fraga is best placed to stop that from happening, but he’ll need a big result on Sunday to do it.

Gran Turismo Roots

As most GTPlanet readers will know, Fraga’s path to Super Formula started in Gran Turismo. He was the inaugural FIA Gran Turismo Nations Cup World Champion in 2018 and a Manufacturer Series champion with Toyota in 2019 and 2021, and he still carries Gran Turismo sponsorship on his helmet today.

He picked up his first Super Formula win and Rookie of the Year honors at the end of 2025, then won again at Fuji in July in a rescheduled sprint race. Saturday’s result is the first time he has done it from the front of the grid over a full race distance.

Congratulations, Igor!
