DENPASAR, Bali — A Chinese tourist has reported losing jewelry worth around US$10,000 after discovering that a box containing valuables had disappeared from her suitcase during a trip in Bali.

The tourist, identified as Xu Li, filed a police report in Buleleng on October 6 after noticing the jewelry was missing when she arrived at a hotel in Lovina. Police said the suspected theft may have occurred earlier that day in South Denpasar, while the suitcase was left inside a travel vehicle as Xu Li and her group visited Nusa Penida.

Xu Li had been travelling with seven other Chinese tourists. The group was picked up from a hotel in Kuta before being driven to Serangan Harbour in South Denpasar, where they departed for Nusa Penida at around 8 a.m.

Their suitcases and other belongings were left inside the travel vehicle. The driver told police that he later parked the vehicle in a garage on Jalan Pulau Roti, South Denpasar, while the tourists were on the island, and that the vehicle had been locked.

At around 2:30 p.m., the driver returned to collect the vehicle before picking up the group again at Serangan Harbour and continuing the journey to Buleleng.

When Xu Li arrived at a hotel in Lovina at around 10 p.m., she noticed that the combination code on her suitcase had changed. After managing to open it, she discovered that a jewelry box stored inside was missing.

The missing items reportedly included rings, earrings, pearl earrings and an emerald bracelet, with the total value estimated at around US$10,000.

Xu Li later contacted the tour guide and driver and asked about the missing jewelry, but both said they did not know what had happened to the items. She then reported the case to Buleleng Police.

Buleleng Police spokesperson Iptu Yohana Rosalin Diaz said investigators were coordinating with police in South Denpasar because that area is believed to be the most likely location where the jewelry disappeared.

Police have begun questioning witnesses, including the driver, tour guide and hotel staff, as they work to determine when and where the suitcase was accessed and who may have been responsible.

The investigation remains ongoing.
