Some of what Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald saw upon review wasn’t as bad as he’d thought following a 33-31 loss to the Commanders. Here are his thoughts.
For the first time in 316 days, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald sat down Monday to review film of a game his team lost the day before.
Some of what he saw, Macdonald said, wasn’t as bad as he’d thought while walking off the field following a 33-31 loss to the Washington Commanders.
That was specifically true when it came to assessing effort and want-to.
“They played really hard,’’ Macdonald said
But a few too many times, execution was wanting, which led to Seattle giving the ball up three times and not getting any turnovers in return and also allowing the Commanders to run for first downs twice on third-down plays to run out the final 2:51 and prevent the Seahawks getting a final shot to pull out what would have been their 13th straight win.
“It’s mixed emotions,’’ Macdonald said. “It’s an excitement about the type of team that we can have and aspire to be, that it’s there. And it’s also a sense of urgency and a little bit of a kick in the gut that we’re not there yet and that we have room to grow. But the exciting thing is it’s early in the season and we have an opportunity to go make it right.’’
Proof that things are hardly broken lay in some of Seattle’s season numbers to date.
Despite allowing 33 points Sunday — 21 of which were the direct result of turnovers — the Seahawks have allowed the third-fewest points (50) in the NFL and the fewest yards (686) before the Monday night game between the Bears and Philadelphia Eagles
Seattle is also allowing just 4.3 yards per pass — fewest in the NFL — and 3.3 per rush, third fewest.
And offensively, Seattle’s 8.1 yards per pass play on offense — which some regard as the most critical number for a team’s win-loss success — is third highest.
But the numbers that are glaring to the negative are no surprise to anyone who watched Sunday’s game — Seattle’s offensive rushing stats.
After gaining just 44 yards on 18 carries Sunday, just 2.4 per attempt with a long of 11 — which came on the first play of the game — the Seahawks are 18th in total rushing yards (303), and 22nd in yards per attempt (3.8).
Macdonald said what he feels is a good Washington run defense — allowing 3.8 yards per attempt for the season — was a significant factor, along with the Seahawks having “plenty of room to grow’’ in their running game.
The Commanders, though, are 30th in yards allowed per pass.
And that likely contributed to what Macdonald said was a game plan in which there were “some things we wanted to be able to do offensively in the pass game and the screen game’’ which contributed to Seattle having a 46-to-18 pass-to-run ratio.
When the Seahawks then fell behind 24-10 early in the third quarter, it also meant having to throw more.
“The way the game was going we needed to throw it there for the majority of the second half as well,’’ Macdonald said.
The Seahawks had a 23-to-6 pass-to-run ratio in the second half and Sam Darnold threw for 379 yards for the game. They had 393 passing yards overall (receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba threw for the other 14).
It also didn’t help that rookie first-round pick Jadarian Price fumbled the ball away on the first play of Seattle’s second series — his second lost fumble in two games.
Macdonald then decided not to play Price much of the rest of the half saying he wanted to let him “calm it down’’ some before inserting him back in the game.
Price ended up playing 19 of 67 offensive snaps, while Emanuel Wilson and George Holani each played 24, but finished with just 15 yards on five carries and also caught just one of three pass targets for seven yards.
Macdonald made clear Monday the team has lost no faith in Price, who was the 32nd overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft and the second running back selected, taken as the key part of the team’s effort to replace departed free agent and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III.
“He understands what’s going on (that) he needs to take care of the ball,’’ Macdonald said. “There’s some things fundamentally where we can focus on. And we’re going to continue to give him the ball. We trust him. We know that he’s going to work hard to do his part as well.”
Love ‘day-to-day’The Seahawks played the game with a pair of backup safeties in Rodney Thomas II and AJ Finley with starters Ty Okada and Julian Love out with injuries.
Macdonald said it’s unclear the status of Okada and Love for Sunday’s game against the Chargers.
But he passed along an encouraging update on Love, who suffered a calf injury late last week.
“It’s a day-to-day thing right now,’’ Macdonald said. “We’ll see how that shakes out. He did some extensive work this morning and it went well. We’ll see how that translates to Wednesday and move forward.”
As for the play of Thomas and Finley, Macdonald said: “Guys played good football, they communicated. There are some opportunities out there that I think both would say we’d like to be able to take advantage next time.’’
Could Emmanwori’s role get streamlined? After playing nine snaps in his season debut last week at Arizona, safety Nick Emmanwori started and played 36 of 69 against the Commanders.
Emmanwori’s stat line consisted of two tackles. But Macdonald said he thought Emmanwori made more of an impact on the game than the numbers showed.
“I thought Nick had a good game,’’ Macdonald said. “There were some really great plays, and he’ll continue to get better.’’
But Macdonald seemed to hint that the Seahawks will evaluate how Emmanwori is being used. He continues to play on the line, at linebacker and in the secondary. According to Pro Football Focus, nine snaps on the line Sunday, 11 on the second level, 15 as a slot corner and one as a wide corner.
“I think that’s one of the things that’s something that we want to discuss as a staff of what the process is every week of how, where and how often he plays, so he can have a really focused game plan,’’ Macdonald said. “Where he plays really affects the position group around him because he’s playing out of really three position groups. That’s something we’ll continue to think about and make better, but he’s done a great job.”
No decision yet on CharbonnetRunning back Zach Charbonnet is eligible to return to practice and open a 21-day practice window before the team would then either have to put him on the active roster or leave him on the physically unable to perform list.
Macdonald said he had nothing to announce Monday but that a decision is coming soon.
“We’re still working through that process,’’ he said. “I’m sure we’ll have an answer by sometime tomorrow, whether or not he’ll start practicing this week. It’s not out of the question yet, we just haven’t had an update.”
Charbonnet has not played since last Jan. 17 when he suffered an ACL injury.
