Reporter Bob Condotta grades Seahawks’ win vs. Chargers | Analysis

A win is going to earn you some good grades from Seahawks reporter Bob Condotta, but all those penalties and late scores are going to bring down the GPA.

The longer Sunday’s game went on — the time was officially listed as 3 hours, 19 minutes, though it seemed a lot longer — the worse it seemed to get for the Seahawks.

What appeared to be an easy, feel-good win was suddenly a one-score game and the Chargers had the ball with 1:42 left.

Then, the defense made a play to end it. Uchenna Nwosu’s strip sack and Derick Hall’s recovery of Justin Herbert’s fumble preserved a 30-23 win.

That allowed the Seahawks to celebrate getting to 3-1 on the season and starting what they hope will be another long winning streak.

But that celebration didn’t last long.

Not only were the Seahawks ruing 14 penalties for 150 yards — the latter the most in team history — they know the 4-0 San Francisco 49ers are coming to town next Sunday for an early litmus test of NFC, if not NFL, supremacy.

“We’re really grateful for where we’re at right now and excited to move forward,” coach Mike Macdonald said. “But we also understand that we definitely have a lot of room for improvement with our operation, how we take care of the football and obviously penalties are something we need to address.”

Indeed they do.

On to the grades:

Quarterback

Sam Darnold’s interception on Seattle’s first snap — his third in two games — felt like a bad omen. But Darnold played well enough from there, if not spectacularly, completing 13 of 22 passes for 168 yards and two TDs and keeping the ball out of harm’s way the rest of the game.

Grade: B

Running back

The numbers weren’t overwhelming — 99 yards on 28 carries for backs Emanuel Wilson (21-81) and George Holani (7-18). But it got the job done. Wilson also had three catches for 39 yards and a 23-yard TD on a screen pass. You wished they could have run out the clock on that final drive. But that didn’t feel like a running-back issue.

Grade: B

Receiver

Jaxon Smith-Njigba had his lowest output of the season — five receptions for 76 yards without a TD. But that’s hardly bad. No other receiver had more than one catch. But Rashid Shaheed had two carries for 33 yards including a 28-yard TD that helped the Seahawks break the game open in the second quarter, a nice way for them to put his speed to use. And Tory Horton got his first TD of the season on the 6-yard reception that appeared to put Seattle comfortably ahead 27-6. Cooper Kupp also threw a nice block to help Wilson finish his screen-pass TD.

Grade: B

Tight end

Statistically, there was little from this group — one catch by AJ Barner for 12 yards, though it helped set up Wilson’s 8-yard TD run. Brady Russell got a costly personal foul for unnecessary roughness in the first quarter that helped kill a drive and seemed to set a tone for what was to come.

Grade: C

Offensive line

There were some really good moments, such as the execution on Wilson’s screen pass, notably an edge-setting block by right tackle Abraham Lucas to clear a hole and center Jalen Sundell and right guard Christian Haynes leading the way to the end zone.

But Darnold got hit nine times and sacked three times, and the Seahawks had some real struggles on third downs, converting just 3 of 12.

Haynes again started at right guard, but Beau Stephens also rotated in. Haynes played the first and third quarters, while Stephens got the second and fourth.

Grade: B-minus

Defensive line

It was another good day for the interior. Byron Murphy II got some consistent push and a sack on a play when he was standing at the line and just blew past left guard Trevor Penning. The Chargers’ 147 yards rushing on 32 carries is a little misleading given that quarterback Justin Herbert got 40 of it. Still, there seemed to be more room for opposing backs to run than there often is.

Grade: B

Rush end

Former Charger Uchenna Nwosu had one of his best days with three QB hits and the sack at the end that helped save the game. DeMarcus Lawrence had a sack wiped away due to an unnecessary roughness penalty along with two other tackles-for-a-loss. Derick Hall also had a roughness penalty, one the team argued vehemently but that counted nonetheless.

Grade: A-minus

Inside linebacker

Drake Thomas had a reaching, diving, juggling interception on the first play of the game and Ernest Jones IV had one in the second quarter on a play about as easy as can be when Herbert threw it right to him. Jones also had a team-high 12 tackles along with a QB hit. But some of the leaky rushing yards Herbert and the backs got fall on this area.

Grade: B

Safety

Julian Love returned to settle things down in the back end, and the Chargers didn’t have a pass completion of longer than 13 yards until midway through the third quarter. And Nick Emmanwori made his biggest impact of the season with nine tackles, two QB hits, a sack and a pass defense. But Emmanwori also had two penalties, including a foolish one for unnecessary roughness for a head butt that basically gave the Chargers a field goal at the end of the first half. TV showed Macdonald appearing livid as it happened.

Grade: B-minus

Cornerback

Devon Witherspoon had a nice bounceback game with nine tackles, eight solo, many against the run, after he’d had an uncharacteristic game against Washington. His penalty for roughness on a tackle that went out of bounds seemed maybe the most questionable called against the Seahawks.

The coverage also appeared better.

Trevon Diggs saw his first action as a Seahawk playing some snaps in the nickel, though Nehemiah Pritchett continued to get a lot of work in the nickel as well.

Grade: A-minus

Special teams

Another off game for this unit despite one big play — Connor O’Toole’s recovery of a muffed Chargers punt that led to Seattle’s first TD.

O’Toole also got a roughness penalty (if seeming iffy) and Julian Neal had a penalty for illegal use of hands while Jason Myers missed a PAT that he followed by a kickoff short of the landing zone to give the Chargers the ball at the 40. He also missed a 53-yard field goal that was wiped out because of an L.A. penalty, giving him a chance to make a 35-yarder a little later. Michael Dickson also appeared frustrated after he had a 30-yard punt in the second quarter.

Grade: B-minus

Coaching

Give the Seahawks coaches credit for a good week of preparation coming off the tough loss to Washington and long trip back. They certainly seemed ready to play, and the wrinkles in the offense such as the Shaheed runs and the unbalanced formation that led to the TD pass to Horton were nice touches. Macdonald also kept the Chargers off-balance with some nicely called pressures — L.A. had just 92 yards on 31 plays in the first half and punted after five straight possessions. But Macdonald will obviously take a hard look at what is happening with all the penalties.

Grade: B
