For the past 25 years, Big Agnes (named for a peak near the brand’s Steamboat Springs, Colorado HQ) has produced great backpacking and camping gear that often brings a little something extra to the table.

Welcome to Shop Smarter: A series dedicated to highlighting not just what’s on sale, but why it’s worth owning. Discover more here.

That’s certainly the case with its Copper Spur HV UL2 mtnGLO Tent, which features a number of handy innovations and should be of particular interest to Costco members.

Because right now, the warehouse retailer is selling the two-person shelter for $460, 23 percent off the original retail price of $600, meaning $140 in savings.

Amazon shoppers can do almost as well, as the online retailer is selling it for $468, no membership required.

One reason for the big discount is that this is the original iteration of the tent from a few years ago (not to be confused with the $650 update on Big Agnes’s site).

However, it still packs plenty of innovation and, let’s be honest, you could buy a whole lotta Mountain House Cajun Style Jambalaya for the $190 difference in price between the two.

The coolest feature is right there in the name: mtnGLO, which refers to the tent’s integrated LED lighting, which lines the interior and makes it much easier to sort gear, read and hang with friends without frying each other’s retinas with headlamps.

Meanwhile, HV is short for high volume, which the tent delivers via a pre-bent span pole with high-volume angle hub alongside dual doors, dual vestibules and 29 square feet of floor space.

Additional highlights include a 3D bin “mezzanine” in the foot, complemented by an oversize ceiling pocket, four mesh pockets and two media pockets, for plenty of handy off-the-floor storage.

One more smart innovation worth noting: the TipLock Tent Buckles, which combine three functions: secure pole-tip capture, rainfly attachment and tensioner, and stake-out loop, helping to streamline a set-up with a trail weight just under three pounds.

Note: While reviews laud this tent’s light weight, high capability and bikepacking-friendly size, they do point out it’s a fairly tight fit for two, so keep that in mind before loading up on Cajun Style Jambalaya.
