Twenty people, including nine children, have been displaced after a fire at a building in Hartford on Friday morning, firefighters said.
Six dogs and one cat were also rescued from the fire. Another cat is unaccounted for, and one of the dogs was treated by emergency medical services and taken to the veterinarian, according to the fire department.
The Hartford Fire Department responded to a building on Franklin Avenue around 7:47 a.m. and found smoke coming from the he cockloft, which is an area between the ceiling and roof, according to firefighters.
Crews searched the building and did not find anyone inside. No injuries were reported, firefighters said.
City inspectors determined the building is uninhabitable. Five families, including 11 adults and nine children, have been displaced. Hartford’s Special Services Unit and the American Red Cross are assisting the families.
The Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
Connecticut Natural Gas and Eversource are addressing the utilities, firefighters said.
