Survivors, families, and more come together for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Hartford

Дата публикации: 04-10-2026 13:44:44

The annual one-mile walk around Bushnell Park brought the community together Sunday to raise awareness and support the fight against breast cancer.
“3 … 2 … 1 … have a good walk!” said the emcee, kicking off the walk.
With that countdown, breast cancer survivors, fighters, friends and family members took off around Bushnell Park Sunday morning for the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.
The one-mile walk in downtown Hartford is part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bringing the community together around a common cause: fighting breast cancer and working toward a cure.
“We’re out here at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Connecticut, are spreading awareness and coming together as a community. And doing all we can. And the fight against cancer,” said Lizzy Givan, director of events for the American Cancer Society.
Givan said while she hasn’t personally been affected by breast cancer, the disease impacts people and families in many different ways.
“With that there is joy and survivorship and being together and doing whatever we can to, you know, bring more knowledge to this cause and this disease,” Givan said.
Before everyone started walking, they got moving in a different way.
Kisha Snell took the lead for a Zumba warmup, getting the crowd ready before they headed around the park.
For Snell, being there was personal.
“It started way back, my mom is a cancer survivor. And I started fitness because of my mom,” Snell said.
But fitness would eventually become part of Snell’s own fight against breast cancer.
A year later, she returned to the event with a new label: survivor.
“It’s pretty emotional to be here today, a year later, to now stand here as a survivor,” Snell said.
By the way, that familiar voice counting everyone down at the starting line? That was NBC Connecticut’s own Bob Maxon, a role he has taken on for many years.
