The midterm elections are just around the corner. Republicans, Democrats and independents alike should understand the stated priorities of the candidates and parties before casting their ballots.

The Sept. 27 Review-Journal reported that, if Democrats regain control of both the House and Senate, they are prepared to pursue an aggressive oversight agenda, including investigations into President Donald Trump, his family and his administration. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries could also face pressure from members of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing to move quickly toward articles of impeachment against Mr. Trump.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats voted against legislation addressing congressional stock trading and another bill requiring government-issued photo identification to vote — issues that proponents say have broad public support.

Democrats have also taken positions on several contentious issues, including immigration and border policy, ICE funding, transgender participation in women’s sports, higher taxes on upper-income Americans, expanding the Supreme Court, statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., eliminating the Electoral College and expanding entitlement programs.

Whatever their political affiliation, voters deserve to know where candidates and parties stand. An informed electorate requires taking the time to understand the choices and the potential consequences before voting.
