South Africa vs Australia 1st Test Day 3 Highlights: Australia strengthened their position in the opening Test against South Africa in Durban, finishing Day 3 at 33/0 in their second innings, with an overall lead of 139 runs. Resuming at 27/1, South Africa were bowled out for 284 in response to Australia's 390. David Bedingham top-scored with 49, while Aiden Markram contributed 37. Captain Pat Cummins claimed three wickets, with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon picking up two apiece.

South Africa were struggling at 197/8 before Keshav Maharaj (34) and Simon Harmer (35*) produced valuable lower-order resistance, reducing the first-innings deficit to 106 runs. Steve Smith also made history, surpassing Joe Root's record for the most Test catches by a non-wicketkeeper. Australia then negotiated a brief evening session without losing a wicket, with Nic Maddinson unbeaten on 17 and Travis Head on 10. Bad light eventually forced an early close, leaving Australia firmly in control heading into Day 4.

So the umpires have called stumps on Day 3. As Shaun Pollock was saying on air, we have lost nearly 20 overs today. That is about 60 overs lost in the game. Will that affect the outcome of the match? Only time will tell us.

Australia go in with a lead of 139 runs. They are firmly placed in this match and would look to bat the hosts out of the game tomorrow.

Oct 11, 2026, 20:07:11 IST

During the last six, Rickelton was fielding in the deep. He completely failed to spot the ball. That is what prompted the umpires to bring out the light metre. Well, today they have gone five minutes later than yesterday. Anyways, let us wait for the official call from the officials.

Oct 11, 2026, 20:05:07 IST

Bad light again!!!! Umpires have a chat, and the players are walking back. So, play has currently been stopped due to bad light. This is the third time in a row in this game. The close of the day has not yet been announced. But looking at the light, there is little hope that the action will get on the day.

We will lose around 20 overs today. That adds up to 60 overs lost already in the game. This without a single drop of rain, it is indeed unfortunate.

Oct 11, 2026, 20:02:19 IST

Maddinson is trying to stay positive in this innings. A full delivery at the leg stump. He flicks that one over the square leg region and the ball sails away for a maximum. He is motored on in this second innings.

Australia are also moving along at a great rate. They have 33 runs on the board in just 5.4 overs. They already have a 139-run lead now.

Oct 11, 2026, 19:51:38 IST

After his painful stay in the middle in the first innings, Maddinson has come up with a different strategy in the second innings. He has thrown his bat and looked to score runs. Australia have got off to a good start in the second innings. Things are not looking good for South Africa.

Oct 11, 2026, 19:40:59 IST

Short ball at the off and middle. Maddinson pulls that away for a boundary, and with that, he is on the way. He was on a pair and under pressure, but now he has runs on his second crack at Test cricket.

Oct 11, 2026, 19:38:29 IST

So, we are back for the third innings of the match. Travis Head and Nic Maddinson walk out to start the innings for the visitors. Australia will look to put on some quick runs and ask the hosts to chase down a daunting target. However, South Africa will be looking for quick early wickets and look for way to come back into the match.

Oct 11, 2026, 19:26:35 IST

Webster takes the wicket, and that is the end of the innings. Good length ball at the off stump. Nortje looks to defend that and gets an outside edge. The ball goes towards Smith at slip, and he is not missing one today!!! So South Africa's innings comes to an end at 284. Australia take a lead of 106 in the first innings.

Oct 11, 2026, 19:19:44 IST

Nortje is looking really good with the bat. He is driving the ball off the front foot when it is in his arc and defending them when needed. This partnership is developing nicely and adding some crucial runs for South Africa.

Oct 11, 2026, 19:17:26 IST

Four more overs before the new ball will be available to Australia. It will be interesting to see, whether they take it immeidately and look to pick up the last wicket wicket with new cherry or they try and get a bit of reverse swing with this old ball.

Oct 11, 2026, 19:09:26 IST

Many South African batters got a start in this innings, but no one converted it as Renshaw did. Markram, Bedingham, Stubbs, Mulder, everyone reached their 30s and then threw away their wickets. While the Aussies have bowled really well, there has been a lack of a application from the South African batters.

Oct 11, 2026, 19:07:10 IST

Tossed up delivery by Lyon. He was inviting Nortje to play the big short, and he accepted it gleefully. Nortje plants his front foot ahead and then slams it over the bowler's head for a boundary. That was some shot by South Africa's number 11.

Oct 11, 2026, 19:05:27 IST

Since Nortje's arrival at the crease, only five runs have been added to the total. However, they have defended well and have tested the patience of the Aussies.

Looking at Nortje and Harmer, no one is expecting that South Africa will go past Australia's total. However, this resilience will give heart to the hosts to come out with a better mindset in the second innings.

Oct 11, 2026, 18:47:57 IST

Just as we were speaking, Maharaj departs!!!! Full ball outside the off stump. Maharaj is tempted to drive that, and he plays that in the air. Cummins at cover takes the catch, and that is the fall of the ninth wicket.

That was a wonderful partnership for the South Africans. Along with Harmer, Maharaj showed that they can be resilient and fight it out. Now, Australia will look to get this last wicket as quickly as possible.

Oct 11, 2026, 18:46:13 IST

Short ball from Hazlewood and Maharaj plays a brilliant shot. He stands tall and just flicks his wrist to put that over the mid-wicket region for a boundary. That shot came literally out of nowhere.

The spin twin of South Africa have now added 50 runs for the ninth wicket. So, once more, it is the ninth wicket partnership that is frustrating a bowling attack, not the first time in this game. South Africa are now 143 runs behind Australia's first innings total.

Oct 11, 2026, 18:35:25 IST

So, we are here for the last session of the Day. Mitchell Starc will start the proceedings as South Africa look to stretch their innings further. Cummins will hope for these two wickets as quickly as possible. Then they will try and post a total that automatically takes out a South African win out of the equation.

Oct 11, 2026, 18:13:10 IST

South Africa have made it to Tea on Day 3. 120 runs in that session and four wickets to fall. When South Africa lost their eighth, it looked like the innings would get over pretty quickly. However, Maharaj and Harmer have tried to get the hosts back in to the game with resolute batting.

Oct 11, 2026, 18:03:24 IST

This partnership has really frustrated the Australians. After the eighth wicket, Cummins and his team would have been thinking of how they would approach their next innings. But Maharaj and Harmer have decided to show restraint and resilience, keeping the Aussies waiting for their second dig with the bat in this match. However the deficit for the hosts is still 162 runs.

Oct 11, 2026, 17:51:00 IST

Jansen and Maharaj are showing great resistance here. They have put together a 29-run partnership. Coincidentally, it was the ninth wicket partnership between Renshaw and Lyon in the Australian innings that helped them propel towards the 390-run total. Can these two produce something similar?

Oct 11, 2026, 17:28:33 IST

Keshav Maharaja now goes for the pull and gets a boundary. That is the 200-up for South Africa. It was a risky shot; however, that time it went in favour of the hosts.

For Australia, Cummins and Lyon showed great fight. Now, it is on the South African lower order to show resilience and put up a fight. They should aim to get as close as possible to the Australian total.

Oct 11, 2026, 17:18:17 IST

Marco Jansen departs. Josh Hazlewood gets the wicket. South Africa are now 197/8. Stubbs and Mulder were looking steady in the middle, but Cummins picked up a couple of wickets, and that has unravelled this innings. The hosts have lost their way completely and now they are looking at a huge trail in the first innings.

Oct 11, 2026, 17:13:15 IST

STEVE SMITH IS A GENIUS!!!!! WHAT A GRAB!!!! Reverse sweep from Steve Smith, the ball was flying away past him at first slip. But Smith reacts sharply, dives to his right, and takes a stunner. That is the seventh wicket for Australia and they are now firmy in the driver's seat.

But that wicket belongs more to Smith than Lyon.

Oct 11, 2026, 17:03:58 IST

Marco Jansen is taking on the bowlers. He is trying to stay positive, be it pacers or spinners. First, he belted Cummins for a few boundaries, and now he is playing his shots without inhibition against Nathan Lyon.

However, South Africa need much more than a few boundaries to get back in in this match.

Oct 11, 2026, 16:49:04 IST

Two short balls and two boundaries. Marco Jansen is unfazed by the pressure. He will play his shots. South Africa are way behind in the game and they will take whatever runs are added to the total.

Can South Africa stage a comeback from here? We will find out. Beau Webster has been brought into the attack by Cummins.

Oct 11, 2026, 16:44:24 IST

IN THE AIR AND TAKEN!!!!! Short ball at the off stump line. Stubbs goes for the pull and gets a top edge. Hazlewood takes the catch in the deep, and South Africa are under pressure again.

Cummins set the field for the short ball just before starting his run-up, and Stubbs took the bait. Call it brilliant planning or irresponsible batting, Australia will be happy.
