A Massachusetts high school is in mourning after the death of its football captain at the age of just 17.

Marblehead High School announced on Friday that senior Owen Coyne, a three-sport athlete, had passed away from a 'sudden brain hemorrhage' not caused by impact - just months after he committed to play football for Williams College.

Coyne leaves behind his parents, Angela Paradise and Brian Coyne, and siblings Grady, Landon and Ella. On Friday they released a statement on his death.

'It is with broken hearts and unimaginable sadness that we share that our beloved Owen has passed away,' the family said, per the Marblehead Current.

'There are simply no words for the loss of a child, a brother, a captain, a teammate, a friend, and a young man who is so deeply loved by so many.

'Owen brought so much joy, laughter, and light into the lives of those who knew him, and the impact he made will remain with us forever.'

The 17-year-old's death comes months after he committed to play football for Williams College

The Marblehead Magicians were slated to face Danvers on Saturday but the game has been canceled.

Coyne was a wide receiver who received offers from a number of schools before committing to play for Williams. He served as Marblehead co-captain and was also part of the school's varsity baseball and track teams.

'That we will never see our Owie pursue his college dreams after working so very hard throughout high school to earn his spot at Williams is beyond heartbreaking,' his mother told the Marblehead Current.

'Owen, you were truly a gift — the BEST gift—to all of us. I am so grateful that I am your mom.'

Angela Paradise continued: 'Words cannot convey how sorry (and gutted and angry and shattered and confused) I am that you were robbed of your beautiful life with us — and with SO much promise ahead.'
