ICANN published the full list of 1,616 top level domain applications on Wednesday.

Just over 20% of applications (345) are so-called “dot-brand” domains.

There are a lot of interesting applications. Here are some things that stand out to me.

  • Vibe coding platforms joined the fray: Lovable and Vercel both applied for matching domains. Replit did not.
  • The National Hockey League applied for .nhl. The MLB, NFL, and NBA all got their domains in the 2012 round.
  • Bank of America applied for .erica. It calls its chatbot Erica.
  • It’s interesting to see an old-school internet company like eBay apply this round. Why now, after skipping the 2012 round?
  • It’s also interesting to see Meta go after all its major brands. One non-brand has me scratching my head, though: .aiglasses needs its own TLD? Maybe the company should try to acquire AIglasses.com instead. It also applied as non-brands for .metaverse and .superintelligence.
