Passengers on a train in the United Kingdom were left dodging water dripping from the ceiling after a faulty air conditioning system caused one of East Midlands Railway’s newest trains to “rain” inside the carriage.

The incident occurred on an East Midlands Railway (EMR) service traveling from London St Pancras to Derby during a recent heatwave. Travelers said water poured from the malfunctioning air conditioning system, soaking passengers and even forcing one commuter to lend her umbrella to another. EMR later confirmed the leak was caused by a fault in the train’s cooling system, according to BBC News.

Regular commuter Carolyn Burke said the delayed 9:32 p.m. service was already overcrowded after two earlier trains had been canceled, leaving passengers scrambling for space. Once the train departed, water began leaking heavily from the ceiling, dripping onto standing passengers and people using laptops.

Burke, who paid more than £127 for a return ticket booked weeks in advance, described the experience as “a new low” in her commute. She criticized the high cost of rail travel, saying it was often cheaper to fly to Europe than travel between London and Derby by train.

Another passenger, Amanda Lockett, said the leak gradually worsened, spreading across the carriage and soaking multiple travelers. Despite the inconvenience, she said many passengers ended up laughing at the bizarre situation.

EMR apologized for the incident, calling the fault “unacceptable.” The company said the problem has affected its new Aurora train fleet and that maintenance contractor Hitachi Rail has been investigating the issue. While a fix has reportedly resolved the problem on most of the 10 Aurora trains currently in service, one train continues to experience the defect and is undergoing further testing.

The railway operator has encouraged affected passengers to contact its customer service team to request compensation or refunds. Hitachi Rail has not yet publicly commented on the incident.
