It wouldn't be Florida without daily afternoon thunderstorms.
Rockstar Games has revealed new GTA 6 details, confirming hurricanes and tropical storms, more than 170 animal species, and six regions in the fictional state of Leonida.
Rockstar developers shared the information in a cover story interview published on September 29, less than two months before Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19.
The reveal includes new screenshots and comments from Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut, vice president of art for lighting and rendering Owen Shepherd, and vice president of dynamic art Michael Kane.
GTA 6 Weather System and Map RegionsOwen Shepherd says Rockstar has "re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent," with fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map.
Players can stand in sunshine while watching a rainstorm in the distance. Rain creates rainbows under the right lighting, and recently showered areas keep persistent puddles after a storm passes. Wind ripples water, moves hair, and pushes debris.
Hurricanes and tropical storms are also confirmed. Shepherd describes heavy clouds, strong winds, and rain that leaves "everything dripping wet." Rockstar declined to say how often hurricanes occur or whether they affect the story.
Leonida is split into six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Ambrosia is a rural area with factories and refineries controlled by a biker gang.
Aaron Garbut says the team pushed detail, scope, scale, interaction, and density at the same time. "I don't think we have ever created anything close to this before," Garbut said.
Animals, Activities, and Story Choices in GTA 6GTA 6 includes more than 170 animal species, among them over 60 birds and over 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles. Sharks, jellyfish, whales, turtles, and rays can be found while scuba diving. Animal tracking returns, and Rockstar confirmed rare animals without naming them.
Confirmed side activities include:
Fast travel works through ride share cars, where passengers can hold conversations. Players can scroll Snapmatic, the in-game social app, but Jason and Lucia cannot post to it because they are on the run.
Robberies can be done as a duo or alone, loud or quiet, and those choices affect the police response. If either protagonist is overwhelmed by police, the game ends.
High end cars need special tools to steal and may carry trackers, and an app called WAiNK shows a car's resale value and security system. Choices also shape the relationship between Jason and Lucia and the wider story, which Rockstar says encourages replays.
Rockstar recently told GTA 6 voice actors to stay quiet until launch. No gameplay video of the weather system was released with the reveal, and Rockstar has not said whether storms cause flooding or damage to buildings.
