Microsoft has opened its Xbox Disc-to-Digital program to all players on Xbox Series X|S, allowing owners of physical Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One game discs to receive a digital license for those games.

Xbox announced the rollout on September 29, 2026, after Xbox Insiders tested the feature for about a month, and says it works with most Xbox Series X and Xbox One physical discs.

The program creates a digital license for a disc as if the game had been bought on the digital Xbox Store. Once that license exists, the game can be installed and played on the console without the disc in the drive.

A converted license is not limited to the console that read the disc. According to Xbox, the digital license allows the game to be played on any platform within the Xbox ecosystem, streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming, or played on compatible handhelds such as the Xbox Ally when the title supports Xbox Play Anywhere.

Each license stays tied to the physical disc. If an owner sells or lends a disc, the new holder claims the digital license after installing the game, and the original owner's digital rights are revoked until the disc comes back or the game is bought again.

Not every game qualifies. Microsoft's support page states that eligibility may change over time because of "technical, licensing, publishing, manufacturing, and other factors."

Sega and Ubisoft have added their games to the program, and a community-run Disc-to-Digital database on XCT.live lists 1,578 Xbox games as fully compatible.

The program also covers some delisted titles. Deadpool, Transformers: Devastation, and Minecraft: Story Mode, which were removed from the Xbox digital store years ago, can be played digitally again with a physical copy. Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark did not receive a digital license during Insider testing.

Converting a disc collection means the games still have to be installed or backed up somewhere. The Xbox Series X model with a disc drive has 802GB of usable storage, while Xbox install sizes range from about 30GB to 170 to 190GB for larger releases. Gears of War E-Day needs 120GB, Baldur's Gate 3 about 150GB, and The Witcher 3 Remastered 50GB.

1. Check whether each disc is eligible before relying on the program, using Microsoft's support page or the community compatibility list.
2. Keep the physical disc after conversion, since selling or lending it moves the digital license to the new holder.
3. Plan extra storage for a large collection; the Series X accepts USB 3.0 external hard drives for storing games, but a game kept there has to be moved to system storage before it can be played.

Microsoft has not published a full list of eligible discs, and titles that are not supported today may be added or excluded later depending on licensing and publisher decisions.
