Ten million dollars has been earmarked for the redevelopment of an events center in the Commercial Center.

The Clark County Commission allocated the funds to Insomniac, the company behind Electric Daisy Carnival, for the redevelopment of the Sahara Event Center at 800 Liberace Ave. The Tuesday vote only earmarked the money for the redevelopment; funds will be dispersed upon a formal agreement with the county’s Redevelopment Agency.

According to Commissioner Tick Segerblom, Insomniac itself will put $20 million into renovations.

Clark County has long been working on plans for the redevelopment of Commercial Center. During the meeting, Segerblom mentioned the commission gave consulting firm Gensler “about half a million dollars” to come up with proposals for the area, one of them being to renovate the events center.

Multiple people came to the meeting to share their opposition to the allocation, including Alan Stamm, a representative of the Las Vegas Country Club Estates Homeowners Association.

The Las Vegas Country Club is located just south of the events center, 150 feet from some homes.

According to Stamm, the commission has not contacted the association about the “visions” for the area, calling the redevelopment “hasty” and “premature,” as well as asking for the item to be tabled.

Another public commenter, Jay Pleggenkuhle, who also lives in the neighborhood, said he believes the proposed venue is not “appropriate to create community.”

“This venue that is proposed is going to disrupt our quality of life,” Pleggenkuhle said. ”I don’t think any of you would like this in your backyard.”

Clark County has put millions of dollars into the center for future redevelopment. The Redevelopment Agency purchased New Orleans Square, a shopping center adjacent to the event center, in 2024.

Segerblom said the commission has worked “religiously” to secure the area, which, he said, was previously seen as dangerous.

“We’re trying to work with you to make sure the area to the north of Las Vegas Country Club is a secure area,” Segerblom said. “But to do that, we have to have businesses who are active and people who are active there.”

The allocation was unanimously approved by commissioners.
