Citadel founder-backed super PAC spends $4.9m in Florida Senate race

A super political action committee (super PAC) backed by Citadel founder Ken Griffin has spent nearly $5m in the Florida Senate race, directing the bulk of its spending towards opposing Democratic candidate Angie Nixon, according to a report by Reuters.The report cites Federal Election Commission filings as showing that Stronger Safer Nation, an independent expenditure-only committee supported by Griffin, has spent about $4.9m attacking Nixon over the past two weeks. The spending represents roughly 87% of all expenditure in the race during the period.The super PAC was established in 2025 with the stated purpose of supporting Republican Ashley Moody, who was appointed to the US Senate in January 2025 after Marco Rubio became secretary of state. Moody is seeking election to a full term against Nixon.Federal records show that Stronger Safer Nation had raised approximately $12m through the end of June, including a $2.5m contribution from Griffin in May. The committee's FEC filings show more than $12m in total receipts since its registration in March 2025.Griffin, Citadel's founder and chief executive, is one of the largest individual political donors in the US. Reuters reported that he has contributed about $32.3m to federal races during the current election cycle, compared with $74m during the 2022 midterms and $108.8m during the 2024 presidential election cycle.Moody's campaign has also received support from other Republican-aligned political groups. The Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC associated with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, recently spent $30,000 on text messages supporting Moody, according to Reuters.
