It’s not every day that firefighters are called to a skunk rescue, but that’s exactly what happened Tuesday morning for one crew in Frederick.

A young skunk found its way into a large bowl on the north side of the Frederick Skatepark, but couldn’t climb back out. Firefighters stationed in Old Town Frederick, northeast of Erie, were sent to the park at 9:49 a.m.

With the help of a Frederick police animal catch pole, one firefighter lifted the little guy to freedom. The youngster wandered off unscathed, and, what’s perhaps more impressive — all officers and firefighters managed to walk away without being sprayed.

“Whether it’s a structure fire, a medical emergency, or helping a curious critter out of a tough spot, we’re always happy to lend a hand when our community calls,” the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District wrote in a Facebook post.
