The conditions in the mining environment are considered extreme often beyond military specifications. The different devices used at mine sites must not only survive the mud and dust, but also endure getting banged around a little.

Mines operate 24/7, which means that miners must remain constantly vigilant to safety. Low light conditions underground and during the night at surface operations can contribute to dangerous situations. Tools that are easy to use and minimize risk have a high vale for miners.

The Freakin’ Beacon

The Freakin’ Beacon from Kohler Brightstar is a rugged, compact LED flasher designed to keep miners visible and safe. The bright, long-lasting light is available with multiple mounting options.

The Freakin’ Beacon has been certified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as intrinsically safe. The flashes are visible from more than 1,000 feet and available in five colors to identify teams or highlight personnel. They weigh 3.4 ounces and easily attach to hardhats, vests, or belts without getting in the way.

The flasher is waterproof (IP67), dustproof and drop-resistant up to 2 m. The device features a large, glove-friendly push-button switch and multiple mounting options, including metal clip, plastic clip, magnet mount and 3M dual lock. Two AAA alkaline batteries provide up to 200 hours in flash mode.

Self Cleaning Cameras

Cameras play a pivotal role in monitoring material handling and other processes throughout mining operations. These systems, however, are often exposed to rather harsh conditions that can rapidly degrade their performance and require frequent maintenance. To address these challenges, Carroll Technologies offers ExcelSense’s ToughEye series of self-cleaning cameras.

ToughEye cameras use a patented self-cleaning technology to provide maintenance-free operation in demanding conditions. Unlike traditional industrial cameras that rely on compressed air or external cleaning fluids, ToughEye cameras are engineered to clean themselves without requiring any consumables or external systems. This innovation allows for uninterrupted functionality, even in remote or hard-to-service areas where downtime can have substantial cost implications.

Inspired from the natural resilience of the human eye, the ToughEye design incorporates a “re-conditionable” optical micro-surface that actively resists contaminant adhesion. Through a proprietary internal mechanism, the lens is periodically refreshed, allowing abrasive particles to be removed without causing damage to the lens surface. This robust, maintenance-free approach ensures continuous visibility, preserving camera clarity in environments where standard systems would quickly succumb to environmental hazards.

ToughEye cameras are also designed for operational flexibility. The ToughEye-1700 model, for instance, offers multiple ways to initiate its cleaning cycle, including through scheduled intervals, network commands, or direct manual triggers via a physical switch or signal from the machinery. This adaptability enables seamless integration into a wide range of heavy equipment and enhances ease of use across various industrial applications.

Reflective tubes can be used to warn miners of unsupported top. (Photo: CAB)

High Vis Reflective Tubes

The Cambria County Association for the Blind and Handicapped (CAB) said its reflective tubes are the industry favorite for marking off unsupported mine roof. The reflective tubes also greatly improve visibility and safety when marking low roof and other hazard areas. The tubes can be slid over rods for marking haulage roads and unload areas. They are available in 11 different colors.

Made from lightweight, durable 1.25-in. (32-mm) diameter thin wall black tubing covered with microprism retro-reflective vinyl, which has exceptional brilliance and true colors for marking and identification. The smooth reflective surface will not  impregnate with dust and dirt like other reflective materials. It can be wiped clean to restore brilliance. Tubes may be hung vertically with one grommet, horizontally with no grommets, or two grommets. Optional S-hooks available for faster installation. They come packaged in a box of 50.

LED Powered Warning Whips

Drive Industrial Safety claims the Super Duty LED Powered Warning Whips are the toughest LED whip available. They feature protected LED lighting from top to bottom for maximum vehicle visibility beneficial to vehicles and equipment in extreme and harsh weather conditions. These safe and non-conductive Super Duty LED Fiberglass Whips are extremely durable and built to handle all environmental conditions that your vehicle and equipment may experience.

Mine-tough and made of a solid fiberglass internal pole, these whips are protected against impact with their rugged polycarbonate external tubing. They are engineered to equalize pressures while blocking water and contaminants. Standard whip lengths are available from 4 ft (1.22 m) up to 12 ft (3.66 m), and custom sizes are available upon request. Various accessories and LED whip light color options are also available, including safety flags, mounts, single and dual color LED light combinations.

Rock Dusting Equipment

When it comes to rock dusting equipment, Irwin Mine and Tunneling Supply said they are the only name miners need to know. With its acquisition of A.L. Lee in 2020, Irwin cemented itself as the largest manufacturer of rock dust equipment in the USA. The company also partnered with Hafco Foundry in 2018 as the proprietary distributor for its patented Barrel Dusters. No matter the size of your job, you can be confident that Irwin has a machine for the job.

Irwin supplies 30,000-lb bulk dusters mounted on an Irwin railcar, 50- to 150-ton dust silos, 55-lb Hafco barrel dusters, mechanical pull-behind dusters (electro-hydraulic power eliminates the need for underground approvals), trickle dusters from 750 to 3,000 lb, and many more options.

The company’s website has a video that shows the pull-behind duster in action on the surface.

Fall Protection

The Palmer Safety 5-point adjustment harness has been ranked as one of the best fall protection devices, and it’s available for less than $100. With a customized fit for maximum comfort and safety, and sturdy buckles and straps, it can be easily adjusted to fit a range of users.

The dorsal and hip D-rings are made of high-strength steel, and support miners within the capacity range of 130 to 420 lb. A heavy-duty back support/positioning pad, which can be equipped with a removable tool belt, provides added comfort and convenience on the job. A thick, padded construction that helps distribute weight evenly.

Simple, intuitive buckles and straps that can be quickly adjusted to fit the user’s body, even while wearing gloves or other protective gear.

The sewn in back pad and fall indicators offer added protection and peace of mind for workers in high-risk environments, with a padded construction that helps protect the user’s back and shoulders, and built-in indicators that make it easy to tell if the harness has been involved in a fall.
