A 20-year-old New Richmond, Wis., driver was charged Monday with fatally hitting a man in the Town of Hudson, Wis., while intoxicated and then leaving the scene early Sunday.

A passer-by found the man around 4:15 a.m. lying in the roadway in the 500 block of County Highway N and called 911, according to St. Croix County Sheriff Scott Knudson. It appeared he had been struck by a vehicle, he said.

Emergency personnel tried to save the man, who has not yet been identified, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A license plate found at the scene led deputies to a 2022 Toyota Camry at a house in New Richmond — and the arrest of Angelica Marisela Ann Altena, Knudson said.

Altena, who was not injured in the crash, is charged in St. Croix County Circuit with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and hit-and-run involving a death.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Hudson Fire Department, Lakeview Ambulance, Wisconsin State Patrol and the St. Croix County Medical Examiner.

The crash remains under investigation. Altena’s next court appearance is set for Nov. 4.
