San Francisco startup Tab just stepped out of the shadows. With a $300 million valuation on a pre-seed round, the company joins a crowded field of personal AI agents promising to handle life’s tedious chores.

But Tab wants to do things differently. No new app to download. No dashboard to learn. Just open iMessage or WhatsApp, text it like a trusted friend, and watch it act.

Founders Brennan Erbz, Stafford Schlitt and Ammar Amdani began work on Tab earlier this year. They secured backing from TechCrunch reports include SV Angel, Valar Ventures and American Spirit. The company declined to disclose the exact amount raised.

“You text it like you’d text someone you trust and it takes the weight off,” Amdani told TechCrunch. “The bills, the bookings, the calls you keep putting off, remembering the people you love. It has its own phone number, computer, and wallet, so it doesn’t tell you how to do those things. It does them.”

Users message Tab to order groceries, find birthday gifts, book travel or chase down payments. The agent doesn’t stop at suggestions. It executes. It can draft emails, place phone calls to businesses, process payments — always with explicit user approval for anything involving money.

It accepts text, photos, PDFs and videos. Voice calls too. Stuck on hold with an airline? Tab can sit there for you. Practical problems demand practical solutions.

The Messaging-First Approach Gains Traction

This focus on existing chat apps sets Tab apart in a market quickly filling with alternatives. Instinct, the current standout, recently hit a $10 billion valuation after raising $1 billion in fresh capital, according to TechCrunch. Meta launched Muse. OpenAI introduced Dots. All chase the same goal: an AI that manages everyday tasks without forcing users into new interfaces.

Yet valuations tell a story. Typical pre-seed AI companies land between $15 million and $25 million, data from OpenVC cited by TechJuice shows. Tab’s $300 million mark signals investor conviction that the right user experience could win big. And fast.

Ammar Amdani brings experience to the table. The Pakistani-American entrepreneur co-founded Adapt Ventures, an early-stage firm that backed companies such as Clara, Italic and Wander. He earned recognition on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2022. His move from investor to founder reflects broader trends. Talent flows toward consumer AI applications that feel immediate and useful.

Tab grows mostly through word of mouth for now. A waitlist restricts access. The company plans to release a new product soon. Amdani acknowledges the competitive pressure. “This is now somewhat of a consumer AI race,” he said.

Privacy matters here. Tab states it does not use user data to train models. Every significant action requires confirmation. These guardrails address real concerns about autonomous agents handling sensitive tasks or finances.

But questions remain. Can Tab maintain accuracy across unpredictable real-world scenarios? Phone calls to businesses often involve menus, accents and exceptions. Booking travel requires juggling preferences, budgets and changing policies. Execution sounds simple until the first failed reservation.

Investors appear willing to bet anyway. The backers — SV Angel with its strong consumer track record, Valar Ventures known for bold early bets — suggest they see something beyond the hype. A true personal operator that lives inside the apps people already check constantly.

So Tab enters at a high number in a noisy category. Success won’t come from features alone. It will depend on reliability, trust and the elusive quality of feeling like that reliable friend who just gets things done.

Plenty of competitors chase the same dream. Instinct’s rapid rise to $10 billion shows demand exists when the product clicks. Meta and OpenAI bring massive resources. Yet Tab’s bet on pure messaging simplicity might prove the most natural fit for how people actually want to interact with AI.
