Hi Julie,
Thank you so much! So happy to hear this! I love Hiroshima. Have a fantastic time in Hiroshima!
All the best,
Maria
Are you planning to visit Hiroshima and stay? Here we give you our where to stay in Hiroshima guide with what we consider to be the best hotels in Hiroshima and our favorite areas to stay in. All the hotels in this article are well located to explore Hiroshima's main attractions, as detailed in our What to do in Hiroshima guide.
On the coastline of Western Honshu (Japan's main island), San-yo, which literally means “sunny side of the mountain,” you find the modern metropolitan city of Hiroshima. With its 1,2 million inhabitants, it is a vibrant, warm-hearted port city looking southward out over the Inland Sea.
Hiroshima Has Lots Of AttractionsHiroshima is most famous for its sad and horrific history of being hit by the world's first atomic bomb on the 6th of August 1945. Although the city reflects this tragedy, modern-day Hiroshima is a joyful city with a lot to offer its visitors – from art museums to lovely parks, Hiroshima Castle, and the fantastic Shukkeien Japanese Garden.
PinThe fantastic Peace Memorial Park and Museum is the city's biggest attraction.Hiroshima is a compact city, with most of its sights and attractions reachable on foot from Hiroshima Station or by the city's excellent public transport: the city tram and sightseeing loop shuttle bus Meipuru-pu (Maple Loop Bus).
PinSix rivers run through Hiroshima city, dividing it into six islands connected by bridges. Here, you see the Atomic Dome, Hiroshima's iconic landmark.Although Hiroshima can be visited on a day trip from, for instance, Kyoto or Osaka, it's worth spending a night or two. With a few days here, you can fully explore the city and its surroundings, like the famous floating torii gate on Miyajima Island.
We have been to Hiroshima many times over the years, including once to participate in the annual Peace Memorial Ceremony, and have stayed at several of Hiroshima's hotels.
So, we put together this guide to where to stay in Hiroshima, featuring all the little hotel gems we have discovered. Here, we reveal what we think are the best hotels and areas to stay in Hiroshima and why. We have listed our favorite hotels across all budgets for each area – Top-End, Mid-Range, and Budget.
PinLanterns are floating on the river through Hiroshima during the Peace Memorial Ceremony held on the 6th of August every year. For more details on what to do in Hiroshima, see our detailed step-by-step 1-day Hiroshima Itinerary.
Hiroshima Is A Great Place To Stay For Day TripsYou can easily stay in Hiroshima for several days and make day trips to interesting places in the area, like:
Whether you are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime luxury hotel, a small, stylish boutique hotel, a value-for-your-money business hotel, a budget guesthouse, or a hostel, Hiroshima has it.
One thing Hiroshima lacks, however, is the old traditional Japanese inns called Ryokan, which you'll find a lot of in Kyoto. Probably because most of them were destroyed in the atomic bomb attack in 1945. If you plan on trying out a ryokan on your Japan journey, you should book one in, for instance, Miyajima (a 45-minute train + ferry ride from Hiroshima) or Kyoto.
Hiroshima is relatively affordable when it comes to accommodation. You get more for your money compared to, for instance, Kyoto and Tokyo. So Hiroshima is one of the Japanese cities where you can splurge a little and get a fantastic five-star hotel for a reasonable price.
Important: None of the hotels recommended here are paid placements or have sponsored our stay in any way. We always pay for our own travel. If you book through any of the links in this article, we make a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps keep our site running – so thank you in advance for your support! ♥
We hope you find this guide helpful in finding the best place to stay in Hiroshima!
The 2 Best Areas To Stay In HiroshimaHiroshima has a unique geography, as it is crisscrossed by six rivers that divide the city into small islands, all connected by bridges. Therefore, Hirshoma is nicknamed “City of Water“.
The six islands that make up Hiroshima city each have their distinct features: Nakajima, Moto-machi, Kannon, Eba, Yoshijima, and Higashi.
The best hotels and areas to stay in Hiroshima – Downtown Hiroshima Area (black) & Hiroshima Station Area (purple)
We have divided this guide on where to stay in Hiroshima into two areas: Downtown Hiroshima and Hiroshima Station. For each area, we have listed our favorite hotels.
Click on the table of contents below, or scroll down in this article to read more about each area and hotel.
Hiroshima's accommodations are primarily clustered in these two areas of the city:
Hiroshima, however, is a compact city. So, all the attractions are only a short walk, bus ride, or tram ride away, no matter where or in which area you choose to stay.
For each area, we have categorized the hotels into three price levels (which usually also reflect their number of stars):
Of course, the price range for each hotel will vary by season and day of the week, and during public holidays, prices will go up. Hotel prices will, for instance, skyrocket during the annual Golden Week (the first week of May), Japan's biggest holiday.
The following two areas are the best areas to stay in Hiroshima (in our opinion):
The downtown area of Hiroshima includes Peace Memorial Park and Museum, Hondori Arcade (shopping and restaurant street), and Aioi-Dori Avenue and Peace Boulevard/ Heiwa-Odori Street. This area has lots of restaurants, cafes, and shops.
Here you will find Hiroshima's main attractions: the Peace Memorial Park, the Peace Memorial Museum, and the Atomic Bomb Dome.
PinThe famous Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Park & Museum are in the Downtown Hiroshima Area.Hiroshima is a great city to go to for a weekend out. Most bars, pubs, and karaoke joints are found in the city's entertainment district between Aioi-Dori and Heiwa-Odori streets. Most places serve light meals or snacks; some even have live music.

Then, you can easily go back to your hotel for a rest and a quick nap between sightseeing, changing clothes, or re-packing if you plan on heading on an afternoon trip to, for instance, Miyajima Island.
When staying in Hiroshima's downtown area, you are also close to many restaurants, cafes, pubs, shops, and nightlife. You can stay out late without worrying about when the last bus leaves or grabbing a taxi.

PinThe beautiful Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is the star attraction in Hiroshima.
PinHiroshima Castle was originally constructed in the 1590s but was destroyed by the atomic bombing in 1945. Today's replica was built in 1958.
PinOrizuru Tower, with its top-floor observation deck, is located right next to the Atomic Bomb Dome and is well worth a visit.

Where To Stay In Downtown Hiroshima AreaMid-RangeHilton Hiroshima
The American hotel chain Hilton has opened a hotel in Hiroshima (opened September 2022). This fantastic 4-star hotel has an indoor swimming pool (one of the few in Hiroshima), a sauna, a well-equipped gym, and three restaurants. It offers all the comfort that Hilton is known for: an excellent breakfast buffet and huge, comfortable rooms (35 sqm and up). The hotel has 419 rooms.
The beds, pillows, and duvets are high-quality and super comfy. You can walk to the Peace Park in about 20 minutes, or take the city loop bus (bus stop right in front of the hotel), or a taxi. The rooms are beautiful, and the higher floors have fantastic city views from panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows. Some rooms even have a sea view.

Hotel Intergate Hiroshima
This is one of our favorite Japanese hotel chains. It has a hot spring bath/ Onsen and washing machines (super convenient for doing laundry). Here, they serve free drinks and snacks every afternoon. The hotel has comfortable and modern rooms that are spotlessly clean.

KIRO Hiroshima by THE SHARE HOTELS
Kiro, which opened in July 2019, is super chic and modern. It is close to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum & Park (a 13-minute walk) and downtown Hiroshima's restaurant and shopping area. It is easily accessible from Hiroshima Station by the city tram or taxi.
I love the urban, minimalistic, hipster-like design of the rooms. If you are traveling with your family or a group of friends, you can go for triple or quadruple rooms with a loft or their family rooms with bunk beds for up to six people. The small cafe serves excellent coffee made by baristas. The hotel has a shared kitchen if you want to make food.

Y-Hotel
A great small hotel (with only 10 rooms) that opened in July 2022. It has an excellent central location close to all of Hiroshima's attractions. I especially love the rooms that have a hot tub/jacuzzi (some even have an outdoor one) and a balcony. The Deluxe Room even has karaoke! The free drinks in the guest lounge, as well as free movies on the TV, are other highly appreciated perks. A real gem of a hotel!

fav Hiroshima Heiwaodori
An excellent 4-star hotel (opened October 2022) with rooms like small apartments, featuring a kitchenette (fridge, microwave, and a kettle), a washing machine, and a private bathroom (the toilet is separate from the bathroom). I love the stylish interior design. The 52 rooms are spacious and comfortable. There is a 7-Eleven and a Family Mart across the street, which is very convenient. It takes about 20 minutes to walk between the hotel and Hiroshima Station, and 10 minutes to walk to the shopping and restaurant area.

This cute hostel in downtown Hiroshima offers private twin rooms (14 sqm, not the biggest) with private bathrooms (even a small bathtub!) and dorms (mixed and female-only). This hostel is spotlessly clean and has a kitchen and washing machines for guests. Also, it has the cutest little bar/ cafe called Hygge & Fika (“hygge” is the Norwegian word for cozy and “fika” means afternoon cake). 🙂 Its name, “mange tak”, means thank you so much in Norwegian. Such a cute and homey hostel with a great and central location.

Hiroshima Station Area surrounds Hiroshima's central railway station and transport hub – JR Hiroshima Station.
This area includes the Kyobashi River, its beautiful riverbank park, Shukkeien Garden, and the Hiroshima Prefectural Museum.
PinHiroshima has an excellent electric tram system that quickly takes you around the city.Hiroshima Station is a railway station and a shopping mall packed with shops, convenience stores, restaurants, pubs, and cafes.
Hiroshima Station has two main entrances: the North Entrance, the Shinkansen (bullet train) entrance, and the South Entrance.
There is a pedestrian tunnel connecting the area in front of the Shinkansen entrance to an underground plaza or shopping mall under the south entrance. The tunnel has shops, restaurants, and several exits, one of which leads to the Hiroshima Station Tram Stop and the hop-on-hop-off Hiroshima Sightseeing Loop Bus Stop (bus stop no. 1). It's super convenient!
Why Stay In The Hiroshima Station Area?Staying close to Hiroshima Station gives you convenient access to public transport and makes it easy to get around the city and surrounding areas, such as Miyajima Island. The city tram and the sightseeing loop bus also depart and arrive at Hiroshima Station.
If you are taking the train to Hiroshima, you will arrive at Hiroshima Station, so staying nearby makes it easy and quick to reach your hotel. When leaving Hiroshima on an early-morning or late-evening train, it is quick and easy to get to your train, and you don't have to get up that early.
Things To See And Do In Hiroshima Station Area
PinShukkeien Garden, close to Hiroshima Station, is one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan. What's The Catch?Except for Hiroshima Station (which has many restaurants and shops), most dining and shopping options are in downtown Hiroshima (a 30-minute walk, a 15-minute tram, or a bus ride away).
There is not much nightlife in the Hiroshima Station area. If you are in Hiroshima to party and want to walk back to your hotel at night, you should stay in the downtown area.
Where To Stay In The Hiroshima Station AreaTop EndSheraton Grand Hiroshima Hotel
We stayed at the Sheraton Grand Hiroshima Hotel on our last visit to Hiroshima, and it was fantastic! Loved everything about this hotel and wished we could have stayed longer.
Located just next to JR Hiroshima Station (a 1-minute walk via the connecting walkway), the Sheraton Grand Hiroshima Hotel is an excellent 5-star luxury hotel with everything you need. It offers an indoor swimming pool (one of the few in Hiroshima), fitness center, and four (!) restaurants.
PinThe reception at the Sheraton Grand HotelThis is Hiroshima's only 5-star hotel, and it is a good value compared to 5-star hotels in other Japanese cities like Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo.
PinOur spacious (35 sqm) and comfortable Deluxe King Room at the Sheraton Grand Hotel HiroshimaWe stayed in a Deluxe King Room, which was huge (35 sqm) and comfortable, more like an American-sized room. We loved the big breakfast buffet, which offers a wide selection of Western and Asian food. You will not go wrong by staying here. It is one of the best hotels we have stayed at in Japan; we did not want to leave.

The air-conditioned rooms (33 in total) are huge (34 sqm) and comfy. When booking, you can choose the kind of beds you want: Western beds or Japanese futon beds on the floor. The biggest rooms (Deluxe Studio) can house up to six people. All rooms have a kitchen, a TV, a washing machine (so convenient!), and a bathtub. Lazuli Hiroshima Hotel and Lounge
A great and beautiful little hotel with 11 rooms, which opened in June 2020. The hotel is beautifully situated on the banks of the Enko River, which runs through the city. Some of the rooms have a balcony facing the river. You can choose between rooms with regular beds and more Japanese traditional rooms with tatami beds on the floor. All rooms are spacious (40-45 sqm) and can accommodate up to five people, except the Standard Twin Rooms (28 sqm). And did I mention that guests can enjoy free sake tasting every evening from 17/ 5 pm until 21/ 9 pm in the lounge area. Guests can also rent bikes at the hotel.
