A Sound Transit light rail train crowded with college football fans broke down in a tunnel soon after Sunday’s Apple Cup game between the University of Washington and Washington State University at Husky Stadium.

The northbound train lost power and stalled south of Roosevelt Station around 5:50 p.m., Sound Transit spokesperson Rachelle Cunningham said. That was about an hour after the Apple Cup concluded.

By 7 p.m., Sound Transit had evacuated passengers on one rescue train back to University District station and sent a second rescue train to evacuate the rest, Cunningham said. The incident caused delays for other trains.

By 8 p.m., all passengers from the stranded train had been evacuated and a “shuttle” train was running between University of Washington and Northgate stations, Cunningham said.

There was a similar incident after the Apple Cup in 2021, when the weight of a fully loaded light rail train triggered a stall. A power cable under the train hit bolts on the tunnel floor that should have been trimmed. Inadequate communication during the 2021 breakdown led some stranded passengers to walk out along the underground tracks.

On Sunday, passengers were stuck on the stalled train with no air conditioning for about 25 minutes, said Evan Daikoku, a Huskies fan who was returning home from the game. Some opened the doors themselves for ventilation and to board the rescue trains, he said.

Back at Husky Stadium, James Pinsoneault, a fan heading north to Mountlake Terrace, said he boarded a later train with his cousin and sister. And it went nowhere for 20 minutes. They got off and their train went back south.

Confused-sounding Sound Transit workers mentioned bus route numbers but were unsure when the buses might show up, Pinsoneault said.

“We weren’t going to just stand there,” he said, so his group ordered an Uber and walked uphill to meet it on UW’s campus.
