Rivera rushes for 225 yards and three touchdowns as Compton scores 24 unanswered points in the second half.
COMPTON — Compton football earned its first Hub City League victory with a 30-6 win over Dominguez on Friday night.
Led by running back Edward Rivera’s three-touchdown performance, the Tarbabes overcame a sluggish first half to earn their sixth win of the season.
Compton outscored the Dons 24-0 in the second half, scoring three touchdowns and converting three 2-point attempts.
Rivera rushed for 225 yards and three touchdowns, a significant improvement from last week against Wilson when he had three yards and one touchdown. Rivera is committed to Sacramento State according to On3.

We are a way better team than that, but in the end, we came away with the dub and that’s all that matters,” Rivera said. “It’s good to get back in that winning column.”
It was the first meeting between the schools since 2021, when Dominguez defeated Compton 44-0, and their first matchup as members of the Hub City League.
Compton (6-1, 1-0) got rolling quickly, scoring on its first possession when Rivera broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run.
The Dons (3-4, 0-1) did not answer until the closing minutes of the first half, when senior Terrell Malone tied the game 6-6 on a 1-yard quarterback sneak.
Compton quarterback Donnie Johnson III struggled through the air against his former school. The former Dominguez quarterback threw two interceptions in the first half and finished with 41 passing yards and one touchdown.
“It felt good seeing my boys again, but we had to handle business,” Johnson said. “We came out running the ball (in the second half), and we had to find something between that. A lot of credit to (Rivera). That’s what he does. That’s Edward.”
Rivera took over after halftime, scoring on runs of 35 and 54 yards to help Compton pull away.
“Our guys were resilient. The guys bounced back,” Compton coach Calvin Bryant said. “We didn’t play a good first half and, you know, our coaching staff did a great job finding what works and we stuck with it.
“(Rivera’s) a very explosive kid. I’m excited, like I’ve said, to have a guy like that on my team. Not only is he just a good kid, but his play reflects everything he’s about.”
Johnson added a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jay’Rome Norwood late in the fourth quarter.
Compton’s six victories are its most since the Tarbabes went 7-6 in 2021.
“Six and one sounds good. You want to win every game you can play, but we got to take the ones that we can get,” Bryant said. “Like I said, I’m excited what the Hub City League is going to do in the future.”
