United Adds Automatic Standby Monitoring for Disrupted Flights

This new feature is rolling out just in time for the busy Labor Day travel weekend.

United has rolled out a mobile app feature that lets customers rebooked after a travel disruption stand by for up to three earlier flights — with the airline monitoring seat availability automatically and sending a text when one opens up. The carrier says the tool is an industry first, and it means clients no longer have to obsessively refresh the app hoping a seat shakes loose.

Here's how it works: After a disruption, customers add themselves to the standby list on up to three earlier flights. United monitors those flights behind the scenes and sends a text notification when a seat becomes available. Customers can then choose whether to switch — while keeping their existing confirmed reservation until they decide.

The timing is no accident. The feature arrives just ahead of the Labor Day rush, with more than 3.4 million travelers expected to fly United between September 3 and 8 — roughly 300,000 more than last year. More than 85 percent of United customers use the airline's app on their day of travel.

"This feature reflects our commitment to making travel more seamless and less stressful for our customers," said Jennifer Schwierzke, vice president of customer operations, strategy and execution at United. "During disruptions, customers can keep their confirmed itinerary and stand by for three additional flights. We work behind the scenes to monitor availability and alert customers as soon as a seat becomes available."

The standby tool joins United's growing suite of self-service recovery options, which let customers automatically rebook flights, receive meal and hotel vouchers when eligible, and track checked bags during disruptions—no hold music required.

Other recent app updates include Digital ID in Apple Wallet for easier TSA PreCheck Touchless ID enrollment; inbound aircraft status shown directly on the flight status page; TSA security wait time estimates at U.S. hub airports (a first among major U.S. carriers); personalized connection support with turn-by-turn gate directions and ConnectionSaver notifications; and integration with Apple's Share Item Location, so clients traveling with an AirTag can share its location with United's customer service team to help track down misplaced luggage.
