Social media is flooded with content reacting to news of the Cornell University case of seven men who are accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at a fraternity house in 2024. From girl dads asking parents of boys to do better to a pediatrician sharing how they talk to their young patients about consent, the case has everyone talking. But one woman has taken to Instagram to share a controversial opinion that’s worth considering.
The social media user, who posts anonymously as @richboymargarita, took to Instagram on Thursday: “I need to say something and just hear me out before you come for me in the comments,” she starts out. “We don’t need any more education around consent.”
“[Men] know. They all know, and they just don’t care,” she continues. “It’s 2026. They were ivy league students. They knew that an incapacitated person couldn’t consent. They didn’t care. They thought they’d get away with it… I am so sick of this being something that people think they can educate their way out of. That, if we could just explain to men how bad it is, they’ll start holding each other accountable. They won’t.”
Further, she says, “I hate watching everyone share the most intimate details of the worst things that ever happened to them because, if we can just raise enough awareness, suddenly there will be this sea change and we will all start treating each other well.” Instead, she says she believes, “Everybody already knows. The awareness has been raised… Nobody cares. They all know and they just don’t care.”
@richboymargarita goes on to offer her take on how women should solve the problem of rape and nonconsensual sexual advances.
“We need a law. We need a new law. We need to get lawyers. We need to start suing them into oblivion. We need to start carrying guns,” she proclaims. “We need to do something else. There is no amount of education that changes this. We don’t need any more statistics, we don’t need any more infographics, we don’t need any more explanations, and I don’t need any more videos from parents about how they’re raising their kids to know that ‘no’ is a complete sentence. These boys knew that ‘no’ is a complete sentence, they just didn’t care.”
The Instagram content creator goes on to switch gears a bit, offering one thing she thinks men could be doing that may turn the tide just a bit. “Boys will treat women how they see their dads treat their moms, so treat your wife well,” she says. “That’s it. I don’t care how you’re raising kids. Be nice to your wife. That’s it.”
Commenters, for the most part, supported the sentiments, saying everything from, “Yep” and “Toddlers understand the word no” to “Rape needs to be treated as a hate crime” and “That’s a start, but the solution will ultimately be the dismantling of patriarchy entirely.” And, someone noted, “None of it works when the most powerful men in office face no consequences.”
