As Hong Kong residents speak up about the bird that died after flying into a gym, we must remember that just weeks earlier, a security guard was jailed for dumping a cat in the trash. It’s clear that some people who encounter animals at work simply don’t know how to respond appropriately.
Cleaners, security guards and property management staff are often the first to deal with lost, injured or distressed animals. Yet many receive little or no training in animal welfare or even the basic protections animals have under Hong Kong law. Some may not realise their mistake until they are sentenced to jail.
Just as frontline workers are taught workplace safety, they should also receive basic guidance on handling animals humanely and legally. A frightened bird or stray cat should never lose its life because of panic or a poor decision.
